Comment:
A vintage calypso mix for some of my friends. These tracks are taken from a number of compilations and individual artist's albums. Some of these tracks are as old as 1912 and one (Bee's Melody) is a Soca track from the 80s. Most are from the 40s or 50s.download it here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/yj5hlq

Feedback:
I've only ever heard Mighty Sparrow, but I'd definitely like to hear more of this kind of music!
It's all incredible. Seriously. Sparrow's the most famous, but he's honestly one of my least favorites (though he does have his moments). I think Lord Kitchener's probably the most consistently good. I posted a zip file of the mix.
Awesome, thanks!
Looks mighty impressive and interesting. Will download immeadietly.
A little before my time but looks to be worth digging into.
Well, 1912 is before my grandpa's time, and he's 90.
I found a Lord Kitchener LP in a charity shop last year, a really great discovery. Some startling stuff here. Excellent.
This looks wonderful! I shall begin my download momentarily...
I once ate an omelette that had been cooked by Lord Ivanhoe's brother.
Lord, Lord, Lord, those calypsonians!
Lord Beginner & Wilmoth Houdini are my faves of the ones I know here, but there's a boatload I look forward to hearing for the first time - thanks for the download.

I actually didn't like Houdini at all until I heard the Best of Trinidad 1912-1929 compilation, which had some great tracks of his. Beginner is good, I think, but really overshadowed by Kitchener for the most part. Lord Invader and Mighty Terror are both really great calypsonians with great, distinct personalities. I've been listening to the Lion a lot lately too. I think he's one of my favorite of the earlier generation.
And alma! Lord Ivanhoe's brother! That's amazing! I hope it was a great omelette.
Wow,thanks so much for sharing this!!!
russwoods, this mix is awesome. loved it from top to bottom, but standouts were Lord Invader & His Calypso Rhythm Boys (both tracks), Young Tiger's "Calypso Bebop," Lord Ivanhoe's "Aguiti," Lord Kitchener's "Love In the Cemetary," Duke of Iron's "Loving Woman Is a Waste of Time" and the track by Chin's Calypso Quartet. but I can't believe you fell for alma cogan's bit about the omelette.
Thank you. And you never know. She could have.
Lord Kitchener is a man among men. I could have (and perhaps will at some point) made an entire mix of Kitchener, but the guy I was making this for initially (before i decided to put it up online) already was pretty into Kitch, so I held back.
I've really fallen in love with Calypso more deeply than I have with just about any other genre in recent years.

Well done and welcome back, thanks for bringing this to the party, right up my alley.
Brilliant! Thanks for the link. Congrats on MotW.
Young Tiger is now my hero for his intrepid dissing of Dizzy Gillespie on Calypso Bebop. A must-hear for all bebop fans as well as calypsonians . . . Thanks again!
Astonishing. I'd covet this if it were released. And, I am floored that this has been shared so generously. We are all quite fortunate. MUCH thanks!!!!!
There's also a Lord Kitchener track that's pro-bebop that I considered putting back to back with that Young Tiger song, but as I said before, I didn't want to overload the mix with Kitch.
OMG this is fabulous. I actually heard Mighty Sparrow live once, although by then I think he was in his "Elvis in Vegas" phase.
Comparing Sparrow to Elvis is spot-on in a lot of ways.
This sounds like it's going to be a great mix! Thanks for posting.
Whoa, does this rock! Link? Trade?
