Comment:

"The really frightening thing about middle age is that you know you'll grow out of it." -Doris Day [b. April 3, 1924] Ever since I read this biography that I picked up from a used book store in the small town of Raymond, WA about eight years ago, I've become a huge Doris Day fan(atic). her films and music have given me many hours of joy, and since today is Doris' 84th birthday, I figured I'd spread some of that joy around to celebrate. If you're not familiar with the life and career of Doris Mary Ann von Kappelhoff [aka. Doris Day], you can read about her here.
For listening, my top recommendation would be this recording, from which I took the song "Summer Has Gone." For watching, here are some tornadoZ Doris Day film recommendations:Doris Day classics:1. Pillow Talk [1959] . her best of 3 with Rock Hudson, she earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for this, her most popular film. 2. Love Me Or Leave Me [1955] . Day plays singer Ruth Etting in this gritty drama that shocked her fans. 3. Romance On the High Seas [1948] . her film debut is a delightful and breezy musical set on the high seas. 4. The Man Who Knew Too Much [1956] . Doris Day does Hitchcock! 5. Move Over, Darling [1963] . she was cast in this comic romp to replace Marilyn Monroe after she died in 1962.Five interesting-but-often-overlooked Doris Day films: 1. It's a Great Feeling [1949] . zany musical loaded with star cameos--like Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Errol Flynn, King Vidor, Jane Wyman, Sidney Greenstreet, Michael Curtiz, etc. 2. Storm Warning [1951] . in this noir thriller, a pregnant Doris Day gets shot in the guts at a KKK rally. not kidding. 3. Young At Heart [1954] . terrific holiday drama with Ol' Blue Eyes. 4. The Glass Bottom Boat [1966] . the poster says it all, really. 5. Billy Rose's Jumbo [1962] . a bizarre, musical fever dream set at the circus. listen to side
one.

two.

Nothing I could possibly say would do justice to this mix, so I'll just leave it as "brilliant."

Great mix. The effort you put into this is obvious.
Back then was a time of obvious movie titles. If you went to see "Romance On the High Seas" ... dammit, romance on the high seas's exactly what you were going to see on the screen! I always thought "Party Line" would have been a better title for "Pillow Talk", but I didn't live through the era, so you can thank AMC and TCM for that opinion.

I love Doris Day (I even dressed up as her for Halloween a while back), and I love this tribute! I gotta say my favorite movie of hers is Pillow Talk, but I also like Lover Come Back, The Glass Bottom Boat and That Touch of Mink... she wasn't just a great singer, she was a fantastic comedienne. Really nice work here Alex!

"The Man Who Knew Too Much" is one of my favourite movies. Hitchcock and Day! What a combo. Fantastic mix, Alex. I really like that Shelleyan Orphan song (hadn't heard it before).

This is really hot stuff Alex, someone I totally ignored till now. That Kay-Muleta is a fave from the first listen. Did she write any of these? I like the newer songs too.

Baby, you've got what it takes.. This is a wonderful mix, lovely tribute. That touch of Mink is a favourite of mine too. And I feel a bit foolish, but I thought the final track on this mix was a Specials original - doh!
