Comment:

Depression mixes are such a boring concept. At one point, they probably actually signified something significant, but now it's basically like an encore at a concert--it's obligatory. This mix is no exception--it's plenty boring and plenty obligatory. And yes, I am very convinced that "Downtown" is a depressing song. Or can be. But maybe that's just because they used it in a depressing scene in Lost. And fie on anyone who suggests "Asleep" instead of "I Know It's Over."

Nothing standard about this, it is perfect as far as I'm concerned, from Tom to Edith.

Agree with doowad, this is far from standard. Great Smiths pick in my book.

What a great opener! Also like those picks from TMBG and Magnetic Fields. Nice inclusion of Tiny Tim & Brave Combo too.

Too true about "Downtown"! I've sometimes thought it would make a good link with the Flatlanders' bleak song "Tonight I Think I'm Gonna Go Downtown" but musically they don't mesh.
And you're right about "Somewhere over the Rainbow", that can sound pretty desperate too.

I can't say I'll be listening to this. I like my wrists un-marred, thanks. But I have a special fondness for that Anita O'Day song.

Good choices from Lou Reed and The Smiths! (Although personally, I find The Kids from the same album a lot more depressing - albeit in a good way.)

Waits' ballads are quintessential "depression" songs.I'm Still Here is a killer. Also, I have to agree with you about "Downtown".and no matter who sings it, Somewhere Over the Rainbow is a tear-jerker.Great and Terribly Sad Mix!

Damn! They've standardized depression now -- the bastards! I blame Amy "who put that voice in there" Winehouse. Great selections though. Berlin -- superb...and Timi Yuro --- brilliant.
