Comment:

I suppose there are a variety of reasons that long-time AOTM members/fans keep checking into the site... to share musical ideas with like-minded souls, to discover new artists, to proclaim our musical obsessions to the masses, etc. And, of course, sometimes, to shamelessly steal another poster's nifty idea for a mix and use it to recreate something of our own using songs from our own collections.
This, of course, is a tribute to (i.e. outright theft from) long-standing AOTM contributor of extraordinary (and often truly twisted) musical taste Ion Moe. Ion's long-running tribute to all things Beach Boys, Pet Soundalikes, represents AOTM at its very best. Ion's series (most recently up to volume 9) ranges from surf music to Beach Boys covers to music borrowing heavily from Brian Wilson's lush Pet Sounds/Smile era. I couldn't hope to achieve this sort of breadth, and instead focused on building a mix in the latter vein -- music that pays tribute to (or gloriously rips off) that mid-60's Beach Boys sound, full of dense (yet still relatively lo-fi) studio production, intermittent falsettos, occasionally ornate orchestration, soaring harmonies, and odd tempo breaks. I made sure to mix this without revisiting Ion's series, so while there is undoubtedly significant overlap of artists, I think there may be some variation in songs. Previewed it once since burning and, yep, it's yummy.

No D/L? That's not fair, sir, especially telling us how yummy it surely is. This sounds like it is right up my alley, I just wish I could hear how it sounds. MOTW just on reputation alone.

This looks scrumptious. I like what I know and am very intrigued by what I don't. Ion is a mighty fine mixer, even if he doubts the existence of Bingo Gazingo, and this is a mighty fine tribute.

Oh, yes! Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Your comments hit the nail on the head. And your mix is amazing!

i must admit to being an enormous fan of the originals from moe, but this certainly lives up to its inspiration - nothing i love more than lush, melancholic pop music, & this delivers in spades - 7, 9, 12, 17-18, 20, 22-24 are favorites...

A Pop Kulcher take on an Ion Moe tribute? What could be better?

I love the cover, basically ALL of the songs, and the inspiration for this. Particularly like the High Llamas, Cosmic Rough Riders - and Baby Lemonade, great!

This look fantastic! I concur with P the Swede. Yes, many of these artists have made an appearance on Pet Soundalikes, but to my recollection, only one song has been duplicated - the quintessential Beach Boys' homage by the Duke boys. I'm very curious to hear the songs I don't know, so I'm definitely going to make a point of downloading this baby tonight. Super cover too!

This is the proverbial humdinger. I had to break out the Ray Bans just to read the titles. Excellent cover art and extremely groovy songs throughout. Please send a copy of this to whomever it is that controls the English weather -- I think they're off sick at the moment -- it's madness here. I will just have to listen to this with the lights on.
