Rosemary and Honey, River and Sea: of Tereza Batista ... to Buglady
Comment:
After commenting on one of her mixes, buglady was thoughtful enough to recommend via email a novel by Jorge Amado. As "Tereza Batista - Home From The Wars" is out of print, the book was not easy to find but I did score a copy from a used bookseller.Set in Bahia, Brazil, the novel evokes the culture of the country as seen through the eyes of a sensual, ambitious woman. The author's strong suit is characterization; he makes you care about the people he is writing about. Some critics take Amado to task for his explicit descriptions of sexual abuse and exploitation of racial stereotypes. I found this work to be a riveting story of one woman's rise from difficult beginnings and victimization.
Thanks to buglady for the tip on this book. And, by the way, she submits great mixes. This mix contains songs that might serve as a soundtrack to "Tereza Batista."
Quiz - For a free copy of the mix with all artwork, answer this question. Which musician on the mix has recorded with both David Byrne and Laurie Anderson?

Feedback:
This looks tremendous! I'm glad the book turned out to be obtainable and inspirational. I haven't read my copy in 20 years, so it's probably time for a re-read!
what coupland book is that?
Added to The Reading Room Annex, along with the other excellent AOTM literary creations.
This looks very interesting. I don't think I'll ever manage a book mix, though I'm a hardcore reader. So full props for the mix, mate.
And that would be Marisa Monte. Try some of Jorge Amado's other titles, too. They are a lot of fun. Gabriela, Clove & Cinnamon, is our favorite. Nice job, can't wait to listen to it.
Who's Wilson Sandoval? Any relation Hope? Anyhow great idea, I haven't read the book but I'll assume it'd be a great soundtrack to it, since it's the work of your good self. Love that 8-10 run.
I've never thought of making a book mix, what an interesting idea! Love Matthew Ryan - I've only known of his existence for about a month!
That book sounds interesting. Kirsty is my top pick but that's probably because I don't many of the other tracks.
This looks impressive, although I've never read the book or heard a ton of these songs. Must rectify both counts.
no borders has the correct answer and wins a copy of the mix.
Lots of favorites here, just a little Spanish typo there: "Solamente te lo doy a ti". La Forgetina and Manu Chao are my favorites. And I have not explored Brazilian writers as deeply as I have Spanish-American novelists, I will have to correct that.
Love the idea of book mixes...it's a fun exercise. Haven't read the book but this mix looks pretty evocative.
Inspired and wonderfully executed. Can't speak about the book, but this makes me wish I liked to read for enjoyment's sake.
Nicely conceived and executed (and an admirable inspiration in our resident Buggy One.) Love the 9-11 stretch.
The book and much of this stuff is new to me, I'll have to research further then eh?
Very impressive mix.
