Comment:
Ok, so I've got a new crush these days, and her name is Jenny Lewis. (With all apologies to Amy Rigby, my prior, and still lingering, musical crush.) 2007's Under the Blacklight was a respectable breakthrough for the band, an album with a handful of solid (if overly tidy) neo-MOR Americana & electronic-infused folk-pop. That led me to pick up the back catalog, not to mention Lewis's semi-solo album. (Also picked up a couple albums by guitarist and occasional vocalist Blake Sennett, recording as The Elected, though this mix is all Jenny.) The albums are painfully inconsistent, with rousing pop and heart-tugging Americana but also some ballads that kinda sit there and more experimental tracks that don't hold my interest. Which makes this a dynamite mix, nothing but wall-to-wall highlights. Lewis' vox are the main event (though I kinda miss some of her less polished but more distinctive early stylings, which were closer to, say, Barbara Manning than Neko Case), but the band provides solid backup. A new Lewis solo album is apparently in the works, but this stuff's been burning a hole in my collection and couldn't put it off.
Feedback:
Rilo Kiley has been a fine band, and I saw them in Asheville recently. Nice compilation here.
I have a Jenny crush as well. So cheers for this; nice choices too.
can't say i dug their latest record, but rilo kiley used to be one of my favorite bands. good mix.
Sounds like someone I definitely must check out.
if there is a more attractive woman in the music world, then i'm the queen of england. that being said, i can't stand her music, though she's gorgeous enough that i WISH i did...
One of the better sounds from last year.
I only have a crush on Kathryn, of course, but if I didn't.........we both had an obsessive moment for Portions For Foxes last summer.
Got turned onto her with the Watson Twins disc and am sold on Rilo Kiley discs as well. Nice balance here.
Boo to none of Blake's songs! But still, the Jenny songs are great all their own. However, I wouldn't have made a Jenny Lewis mix without 85, Melt Your Heart, A Better Son/Daughter and Sword. So I guess my hypothetical Rilo Kiley sampler wopuld look incredibly different from yours!
I too only have a crush on Kathryn, but I'm willing to extend my boundries. Smoke Detector popped up in my shuffle play today, and I was thinking it was Barbara Manning until I looked at my i-pod. Guess I need to know Rilo a little better. Consider this future trade bait :)
I've been meaning to check Jenny out, now I know I need to stop procrastinating. thanks!
