Should you ever find yourself adrift on the high musical seas, longing for the soft, sweet sound whose wave crested somewhere between our nation’s bicentennial and 1984, then come sail away with us into the tropic of Yacht Rock. Christened by Hollywood Steve and his crew in a series on Channel 101, yacht rock doesn’t take place on a yacht, and lots of folks would say it bears only the wispiest resemblance to rock, but it goes down smoother than a strawberry-banana smoothie. It’s all the tastefully coiffed, studio-buffed, easy listening, FM-dial favorites of the day, from Ambrosia to Sade, from Michael McDonald to Melissa Manchester. While their hard-workin’ peers and pals were sweating out the power chords of classic rock, life was laid-back and lovely for these magical, melody-making mavens of the marina.
