Comment:

Over the past week, I've spent some time filtering through old mixes from boxes that were still packed from a move back in August of last year. Some of these are actually on cassette tapes (remember those?). It's amazing how far audio clean-up software has come in the last ten years. Since some of these mixes needed some re-editing to bring them up to today's standards, I had my work cut out for me.
It is said that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself. As David Bowie sings: "You can't trace time." Sprucing up these old mixes would be an enjoyable diversion, yet sometimes you have to let things simply exist as they were. In another ten years, I might feel they require a further update, and another, and another ... Where does it all end?
The author Paul Bowles spoke about how we tend to think of life as an inexhaustible well. Yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.
I decided to re-edit only some the mixes after all; the rest would be left as is. Sitting outside on the lawn, I played this mix and recalled an afternoon much like this one when I was but 13 years old.
Quiz: Which musician among those on the mix started their career by acting in a production of the musical "Hair?" Correct answer wins a copy of the mix, tracked and with artwork.

It would be ironic if the answer to your quiz was Eno or Elton which it might be for all I know. At a guess I'd say Joan Armatrading.
