Comment:
A couple weeks ago, I download Gabe's great TPT masterpiece and the lyrics to Choctaw Bingo hit just a little too close to home. "Gabe, I am white trash," I was forced to admit online later. In any case, I saw Steve Earle Monday night at the Pageant here. He did a nice acoustic show, and though he didn't fulfill my highest expectations in terms of song selection, I was happy that he focused on the more rustic portions of his ouvre. The show just had the potential to be so much better. And, of course, had it gone beyond my expectations, I would have put up a 2-disk tribute here that same night. Steve lost a perfect moment when he had the D.J. swamp it up for CCKMB and gave himself the perfect segue into Copperhead Road, but to no avail. And he was light on the politics, but not quite light enough. Like most poets, he speaks most truthfully reflecting on the human condition, away from such mundane topics as elections. Or maybe if Hilary weren't still buzzing around, I would have been more enthusiastic. He did do the Waits cover here, but I wished he had done the other one, since Steve is to Townes what Bob is to Woody. And I had first seen him open for Dylan twice back in Steve's heroin days, the Copperhead Road tour. Anyway, I tried to include my idea for the encore as well, hope you enjoy the show.Feedback:
brilliant. one of my favorite artists. i've had a 3 disc Steve Earle box set mix on the back burner for quite a while. perhaps this will motivate me to turn up the heat.
Even with your mixed review of the show, I still wish I could've made the trip over for it. Like the look of your setlist/wishlist.
Another cool set, Derek...& don't worry too hard 'bout Mrs. Bill Clinton...(just watch this)
been interested in this fellow since you told me about the show last week - looks like a pretty great access point
Kudos for "The Mountain", but you missed my favorite of his, "The Kind" off of Jerusalem. Saw him live about 8 years ago, hell of a show.
He is so prolific it is hard to stop but this is great.
Well we spoke of my stance on Steve Earle - no prejudices, no nothing really - I just don't know much by him. Ask me again in a couple of days time and that total will be 28. Thanks for this Derek..
I'm happy and proud to say I can duplicate this without doing any downloading. Yay me! Does that make me white trash too? Fantastic lineup, D. The encore kicks ass.
Never explored his work though I know he's highly regarded. I'll start my listening here.
As one white trash to another, this is perfect. I, too, missed "The Kind," but got super-excited about the closer. This is awesome, for shizz.<3 Sara
Hells yeah, mister!! I'm not too proud to say I've got some white trash in me and I DEFINITELY loves me the Steve Earle. I've lost track of him a bit in recent years (too political for me right now), but the man's catalog can sure as hell stand up through the years. Solid stuff.
Steve Earle is a favorite. I've been intending to put together a compilation using mostly bootlegged live stuff, of which I have some really fine discs. Nice comments on the show and a well done for the compilation.
awesome! and: you deserve an oscar for the title. is there already a "Mix Title Laureate?" you cuold be the first.
i kinda missed out on Steve. Shame on me. This looks cool.
Warm and wonderful tribute to Earle.
I've tried and I've tried and I've tried to like Earle... I've even bought several of his albums over the years... but something about his voice has always rubbed me the wrong way, thus surely obscuring what is a fine songwriting talent. I'm going to download this, though, and give it a listen, because I genuinely (I'm not being back-handed here at all) want to like him.
I missed out on the link. Pout. Love Steve Earle's music including his latest.
