Comment:
I tend to believe that most, if not all, record nerds genuinely love their records. Even so, the sort of indie snobishness that a really bitchin' record collection allows you to direct at people who listen to Z100 or something is certainly a neat bonus. This is a mix of stuff that has, at one time or another, set the rock and roll cognicenti chattering. Also included are some bands that have been hip to cite as influences while giving interviews to Vice Magazine or those goddamn weirdos at The Wire. All except the Sisters, I guess, who seemed to fit but who are heroes only to the black-eyeliner-and-mesh-t-shirt crowd. My cousin, for whom this mix was made, should mention these bands while talking to irritating indier-than-thou types. These bands pack so much cred that they'll send 'em scurrying.Feedback:
Heard good things about Santogold. 12-14 got me chattering and finished on a real high with Wire and Slint.
Yo, you got anything by Alicia Keys?
it heartens me to the utmost to hear your affirmation that Bj÷rk once sent the cognoscenti chattering. what ever will they do with themselves now that she's worked with Timbaland...??
That Santogold track is rubbish, is what this record nerd says. But the rest of this mix is ace stuff.
None of the names that perk up my ears are here (Dylan, Waits, Prine, Van Zandt, Woody, Billie, Johnny), but hey, I know I'm rustic. I love that VU and probably the Bj÷rk and Joy Division. Great concept.
Indie cred sometimes is a euphemism for "ain't good enough." But sometimes not. Happily there are a few listed here that are worth a listen.
Looks exactly like a playlist from my local record store. Nice mix.
