Ancestral Spirits
Comment:
The poetry of a people comes from the deep recesses of the unconscious, the irrational and the collective body of its ancestral memories. The same could be said for the poetry of jazz, built step by step on the shoulders of the first players to become the rich music it is today. This mix starts and ends with two jazz musicians that have deep roots in African culture, which is often reflected in their choice of music to play. Abdullah Ibrahim (the former Dollar Brand) grew up in Capetown in the '40s, expatriated and then returned after his conversion to Islam. Randy Weston's childhood was spent in 1930's Brooklyn. His 1991 2-LP masterpiece "Spirits of Our Ancestors" featured guests such as Pharoah Sanders and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the music came to him while touring Africa as part of a U.S. cultural delegation.
On the album's liner notes, Weston said: "People need a sacred narrative. They must have a sense of larger purpose, in one form or another, however intellectualized. They will find a way to keep ancestral spirits alive." I'm all for that, but I don't want to join my ancestral spirits just yet.
Quiz: For a copy of the mix tracked and with artwork, answer this: Which musician wrote the score for the fabulous film Chocolat?Quiz #2: Please answer only one quiz. How did violinist Billy Bang get his stage name?

Feedback:
I'm likin' the looks of this, Dean...and d/ling now.
this looks fucking phenomenal, can't wait hear this in full
This looks really, really good....
LOVE the Miles and (especially) the Mingus.
Oh...Rachel Portman for the Chocolat score...I thought, for a moment, that it was a musician on your mix.
Ever a surprise . . . The spirits have moved you to another masterpiece!
BTW, got the 2nd package of CDs on Friday. Thanks for getting my weekend into the groove, starting with Sundrenched.

Well-done, to say the least ;-)
Many congrats on Mix of The Week. I thought I'd put this on to celebrate.. Perfect Sunday Afternoon listening. I loved that Takadja track..
Had to drop in again to congratulate you on the MOTW. Very well deserved!

This is a great listen! Congrats well done!
and the ancients whisper through the canyons..."Congratulations on MotW...
What a great mix. Love the Ibrahim, Miles Davis, Mark Helias (speaking of pedagogy), Mingus and Geri Allen picks especially. Congratulations on a well deserved MotW.
Congrats on MotW...love track nine.
Congrats on MOTW!
Too cool. Congrats!!! And, well deserved. You tapped a number of great tracks, here. That E.S.P. track brings me back to one of my first "List Excursions". As part of the "50 Albums Every Bassists Should Own" by Bass Player Magazine, that album was one of the first jazz albums I ever purchased. And, opened my ears to one of my favorite groups of all-time. That being the Second Great Miles Davis Quintet, of course. Btw, in case of fire, the boxset highlighting that particular Miles Period would be one of those items I'd grab first.
Much deserved. A really outstanding jazz mix.
Love Miles and Mingus tracks the bestest! Congrats!!!
Great Job!, ditto Rob on the Mingus track.
