No list of ’90s slow jams would be complete without the title track from Prince’s magnificent [i]Diamonds and Pearls[/i], although the song’s as upbeat a ballad as you’re ever likely to hear, with its powerhouse Rosie Gaines backing vocals and rocked-up production flourishes. The first flower of slow-jam diva Mariah Carey’s roller-coaster career is well represented here, with “Can’t Let Go,” “Always Be My Baby,” and “My All”; Whitney Houston strikes the perfect balance between delicacy and power on “I Have Nothing”; and D’Angelo covers Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’” with both eyes on the bedroom. Time to get your laid-back groove on.
