Comment:

When Bob Seger was coming to Knoxville two years ago, I asked my girlfriend if she was interested in going to the show. It was at a larger auditorium in town, however, which made her reluctant to go. Frankly, I'm not so crazy about the large venues either. Then she told me, "You know we can buy a concert dvd or cd and get the experience of live music right at home and not deal with the crowds and traffic."

Unfortunately, you cannot replicate the experience of a live show on dvd or cd. Something is missing but I suppose it's the next best thing. I've seen about half the acts on this double-disc live music mix, including Ronnie Wood pre-Stones (Faces) and The Allman Brothers Band's original lineup. I have great memories of those shows but wonder if those memories would have been so great had not I been younger and more tolerant of annoyances, not to mention desiring to get home to bed before the wee hours.

Anyway, yes, we went to the Seger show and enjoyed it despite the monumental traffic snarls which kept many people from their seats in time for Seger's first chord, the horrible acoustics and those in the crowd who insisted on standing on their chairs. Happily, Knoxville has smaller halls like the Bijou and Tennessee Theater which work nicely for touring acts, although the club scene is not nearly as good as Asheville or Nashville. I make it a point to get out and support live music as often as I can, but in the meantime here's this mix.

Two quizzes this time, one for each disc of the mix. Please answer only one per person. A copy of the mix, tracked and with artwork awaits the winners.
#1 The last act to play the Fillmore East in New York was ...?

#2 The Miami nightclub Woody's on the Beach is partially owned by ...?

Quite a few gems here, esp. like FLeetwood Mac, Pretenders and Mr. Wilson (nice combo with Barenaked Ladies), or, as he is known is this household, God.

Okay before I start gushing, the Echobelly is ..Me not ..You.
Right - this is brilliant. Dylan, Sonic Youth and Marvin on Side 1. Side 2 faves - R.E.M, Wilson, Meters and the awesome Procol Harum. Awesome mix.

A whole bunch of people played the final show. Country Joe, The Allman Brothers, Albert King... who else?

Very nice mix.

Great looking mix. Sonic Youth, R.E.M. (the first time I saw them), and BAD (actually BAD II) are some of the best concerts I ever attended.

Great mix. I have to say that I love live music. But, very sad tooo say, that I'm getting to that age now where having to leave work at 5.00pm to get to a gig for 9.00pm and not get back home until 2.00am ready to get up for work the next day at 6.00am . . . . leaves me very cold.I'm at the buying live DVD stage. how crap is that!!

Good show!

( I kind of agree with the girlfriend about big auditorium/stadium shows, though. Not that most of my favorite living performers are ever going to fill a big hall anyway . . . )

cool concept - tracing your concert-going experience sounds really fun, as does this mix

Yes, there is(was) nothing like a live show. But the damage to my eardrums is forever . . .

As hampering as acoustics, traffic, and ticket prices can be, there's nothing like those chill-inducing, euphoric moments that a live show can produce from time to time. Great mix!

I just got this in the mail yesterday and listened to it today at work and I have to tell you it is awesome. Truely the next best thing to actually being there.

I went to see Paul McCartney at the Staples Center in LA a few years ago and some jerks insisted on standing on their chairs a few rows in front of us and it pretty much ruined half of the concert 'til security told them to stop. But I totally agree about live music.
