Comment:

Okay, so I did it. For Bob Dylan, I did six discs. It used to be four... then there was an unposted five-disc version (I've always said that I would not give anyone more single-artist disc space than the Beatles, so I stopped there arbitrarily)... but five discs--thanks to both the length of many of Dylan's best songs and the forty-six years that he's been recording--just didn't cut it for Bob. At any rate, here's the result. There are still more than a few songs that I would have liked to have included, some of which will be listed on the last volume. This one's for Gerry McDonald, since he did a well-regarded six-disc set years ago, and for doowad, since he's one of Bob's more vocal acolytes around these parts. Also, I didn't think that this was necessary to note (particularly since I always make a point of indicating the exceptions to this rule when there are some), but all of these versions are the standard album versions unless otherwise indicated. They are also compiled in the order in which they were recorded, not released.

mate, a shed load of people (not me, but definitely me bestest matey Cliff) will question the 'why' of all this obvious hard work/fantastic pleasure. I know the 'why'. What is bugging me though is which versions are you including? This could be awesome, or rubbish . . . all depending upon the good Bob's mood at the time. You've got to provide more clues, please.

Thanks, Rob, I appreciate it. You picked an interesting stopping point on side two, I'm sure the length of the songs was the major influence. And I think Cliff might be alone in his contrary boat on this, at least I hope so ;-)

Every now and then I get the urge to listen to Dylan. I never went past Blonde On Blonde until a few years ago when I bought Desire which on the whole I enjoyed. Maybe your mixes will inspire me to delve a little deeper.

Though I'm not as deeply a fan of Dylan as some people here (Doowad, I'm looking at you!), this is still an impressive undertaking. As always, your dedication and ability blows my socks off. Kudos!

holy christ, this may very well be the greatest summation of dylan's work that i've EVER seen, rob - we've talked about how our taste in dylan is quite similar in the past, but this really takes it to all new heights - "baby, let my follow you down," "tomorrow is a long time," "don't think twice," "with god on our side," "lay down your weary tune," "to ramona," "chimes of freedom," "mama you been on my mind," "i'll keep it with mine," "farewell angelina," "love minus zero," "it's alright, ma," "gates of eden," "mr. tambourine man," "baby blue," "tombstone blues," "just like tom thumb's blues," "desolation row," "can you please crawl out your window" & "she's your lover now" (pretty much the whole fucking thing) were either on my dylan mix, or in the running. fantastic fantastic fantastic.

Another moumental effort. These two are pretty well loaded, not a low point in the bunch.

Every now and then, I also get the urge to listen to some Bob. I think my all time fave Dylan tracks ( three represented on these two discs ) are I'll Keep it With Mine, Baby Blue, and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall. Yet I prefer other versions of said tracks.
Maybe I love Dylan as a songwriter more than an artist..

Bob is still #1 among male musicians for me, so this is quite welcome to see. Between his LPs, CDs, box sets and bootlegs, Dylan takes up an inordinate amount of pace in my cabinets but he's worth every bit of the real estate.

This guy sounds pretty interesting; I'll have to check him out. Another staggering compilation, Rob.

For me Dylan is a very strong double disc artist - maybe a decent triple disc. But I've recently begun relistening to his entire catalog and have a discovered a few gems I had previously ignored, so maybe I can can see spreading out to a killer triple. But six?!? Really? Maybe I'll agree with you as I get through the catalog, but for now....
