Comment:
For the hell of it. This is more like it. Title by Mr. Westerberg on the absolutely to-die-for solo demo included here. Hearing this amazing song (which I'd heard about for years prior to its recent release as part of the Replacements' Stink reissue) was almost enough to make me forget the last twenty years of his career (which admittedly has produced a few great tunes, but to me, not much more than that).Feedback:
Aaaahhhh, one of my favorite kinds of mixes by one of my fave mixers. Looks like perfect random summer listening!
Love Randy Newman into New York Dolls, of course. Looking forward to that Westerberg...
Random in tandem with style. A winning formula.
I agree with you re: Paul Westerberg, which is funny because I think he's also quite great... if that makes sense. And the rest looks spot-on cool as can be.
thank you for the Paul Westerberg tip
I like what I know (which, as is the case with a lot of your FTHOI mixes, is a shamefully small percentage). "Isolation" remains one of my favorite JD tracks, and "Pills" is always a great pick-me-up. I'm with you on Paul. While I actually like the "mature songwriter" of the final two Replacements albums quite a bit, I've been surprised that he hasn't been able to replicate that success on his own.
man, i've sorely missed your FTHOI mixes, rob, i fucking LOVE this - beck, joy vision, randy newman, new york dolls, VU...so so great, i'd love a copy of this.
Hell, yeah. Mucho good stuff.
Count me in as a long-time fan of yr FTHOI mixes, Rob. This looks has it has all the hallmarks of a classic, for me. I love the Earth->Westerberg transition (I'm with you 100% on that observation, btw) and the Sun City Girls->Monster Magnet->Elizabeth Cotten stretch looks head-splittingly great. Can't wait to give this a listen.
Man, 16 to 19 looks damn good. Loving this mix, Rob.
Another Hell-Of-A-FTHOI mix (AHOAFTHOI?) !! I can't wait to play this one.
Awesome.
Just ordered the Sparks disc, looking forward to that... also love the 10-11 pairing and am intrigued by your description of the Westerberg track. 11, 16 and 19 are also favs. Another triumph.
Great opener here Rob. Isolation happens to be one of my favourite JD tracks also. Love 11, 16 & 19. Look forward to listening to this, no9 especially..
Cool - especially the Sparks, MoB, Tav Falco picks.
Very nice...love the NY Dolls, MoB, VU, and John Lee Hooker especially.
Great set here, Rob! Always a pleasure. The solo Westerberg demo - did that contain 'Here Comes the Regulars?' (I guess the actual probably sounds a lot like a solo but it's still a favorite of mine.) Pitting 'Isolation' against Russ 'n Ron Mael, whodd'athunkit? Extra cool, as always.
Just for the hell of it, I am downloading.Just for the hell of it: *****Just for the hell of it... damn, dude... another amazing mix!
I'm glad you didn't forget to tell my ears. for the holy shit of it [FTHSOI] is more like it. great opener, really dug the Fucked Up to John Baldry bit - especially that Baldry pick. Paul Westerberg and Elizabeth Cotten were other hi-lites here. nice one, Rob.
Cool. Looks a little down.
Yeah, always loving those for the hell of it mixes. Lots of good stuff here.
Very well-balanced!
