Comment:

If you don't know who the Young Fresh Fellows are, now would be a good time to be introduced. Scott McCaughey (voc/gtr) Tad Hutchinson (drums) Jim Sangster (bass) and Kurt Bloch (guitar - of Fastbacks fame, he replaced original guitarist Chuck Carroll) The Fellows formed in 1983 when Bay Area native McCaughey and Carroll flipped a coin and decided to head to Seattle (the other choice was Tucson.)
They didn't travel up north to form a band, they wanted to start a monthly rock magazine, only to find out that the (late, lamented) Rocket Magazine started the same time they got there! They gigged with the girl group revivalists The Dinette Set. In 1983 the core members of that band became the Young Fresh Fellows.

The Fellows released "The Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest" name and cover art from a 60's Bell Telephone promotional record on Conrad Uno's Popllama label. Combining goofy pop (with sometimes serious lyrical content)along with a love of mid 60's British Invasion mod/pop and American garage rock of the same era, they became a local hit. At that time original rock in Seattle was in the doldrums, Sub Pop was still a few years off, as was grunge.

In the 80's McCaughey went to a R.E.M. concert and met Peter Buck. McCaughey and Buck were kindered spirits, each of them having being record geeks. Later McCaughey and Buck would start the side project that would become the Minus 5. In the 90's McCaughey would join R.E.M as a sideman and studio musician. Carroll retired from the band after the "Totally Lost" album. McCaughey would find a replacement in Kurt Bloch, guitarist for the Fastbacks, who were then in limbo. Like Buck, McCaughey and Bloch had the same musical influences. The lovable Fastbacks would reunite and Bloch traded off guitar duties with both bands. Sangster also played guitar in the Pickets, an alt country band fronted by McCaughey's then-wife Christy McWilson. Drummer Hutchinson, was an artist and also designed the Fellows records covers.

In the 90's after the "Low Beat" album, the Fellows went on hiatus as a touring band, occasionally playing local gigs. They reunited in 2000 to record "Because We Hate You" and rumor has it, they are working on a new album.

McCaughey has said the Fellows could never break up, they wouldn't have the time to do so!
