Something Like A Love Affair ... Remembering Julian Symons
Comment:
A narrative of songs inspired by Julian Symons' novel ...In a small wooded area known as Lover's Lane in Barley Commons, a body is discovered. The corpse leaves a troubled enigma to be solved - as well as a long haunting shadow across the life of one Judith Lassiter, wife of a renowned architect, who writes herself imaginary love letters. Symons writes a tale of lust, infidelity and murder. This is much more than a who-done-it. It questions the dark motives half-buried in every human heart.
Symons is one of the best writers of the cerebral British mystery novel, using dreadful irony and macabre humor to make his points. His characters often find themselves in moral conundrums, like Mrs. Lassiter here, and are treated sympathetically even when making horrifying choices.
Tomorrow for the young the poets exploding like bombs.
Like many tomorrows, that never came.
Yet still, in this elderly today, you smilingly
Give poetry a shape, a rhyme, a name.
Symons wrote about Gavin Ewart, a British poet who died in 1995. The author quotes from Ewart's work in many of his stories. This was written shortly before Symons' death in 1994.
Quiz: Though most people think the musician is French, his/or/her nationality is actually American. Who is it? The correct answer wins a copy of the mix with artwork.

Feedback:
beautiful job!! Love the artwork and the track listing looks terrific. Looking forward to listening.
Haunting, in more ways than one.
Will it be jazz? Will it be pop? You never know with Avocado Rabbit. Some of this I'd relish indulging in like Pavement, Cat Power and the Go-Betweens, others I'd confine to the attic like Texas and Van Morrison, always loathed Van the Sham. Liked the poetry.
#5 and 12 are just a couple of favorites here. Very compelling!
Ooh, I really like that Police track - it's been ages since I heard it. Must give this mix a listen sharpish.. Love 1,4,16 & 20. Probably would've gone for the Al Green original on here, but that's just nit-picking..
Madeleine Peyroux? Either way...this is frikkin' gorgeous and screams quality. Another triumph.
Love the Pavement, Fairport, Cat Power, Van and Go-Betweens picks. Haven't read the book....
musicgnome has the winner in the quiz.
quite beautiful, really - i LOVE that jon brion song like i love few others from the past decade, & the pavement, brendan benson, fairport convention, police, van the man & go-betweens tracks hit the spot as well. really great, seriously.
8-9 are highlights for me.
Just like to say thank you for the mix you sent me. Seemed I was the only one to post a comment on your You Can't Trace Time mix. I couldn't trace the sender due to the bugs that afflicted AOTM recently. Anyway I'm enjoying listening to it right now.
I echo the gnome's sentiment...
Nice one.
Great mix, man.
really liked the tracks here by Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison and especially the Travis pick. thanks for the listen.
Very nicely constructed. I especially like that 1-7 beginning stretch - nice to see Beth Orton making the cut.
