Comment:
This four-disc (expanded from three-disc) set is the latest manifestation of my long-held crusade to prove not only the validity, but the underrated *greatness* of Paul McCartney's oft-unfairly maligned solo career. The fact that McCartney is my favorite artist in the history of music may cloud my perception slightly, but I unequivocally believe that his post-Beatles career, despite having a few horrifying blips ("Ebony and Ivory," Pipes of Peace, Give My Regards to Broad Street, Press to Play, Off the Ground, Tripping the Live Fantastic..., and Paul is Live, along with substantial portions of both Venus & Mars and Wings at the Speed of Sound spring to mind), has been almost uniformly fine (even his last few records, while not featuring to my ears a single memorable song, are still consistently listenable and about as fine as almost any other rocker pushing 70). While his career may not have had the crystallized high points of Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album or Harrison's All Things Must Pass (both released, incidentally, in 1970), from 1970 until 1982 his output was consistently good to great, and I suspect that's more than anyone can say about any of the other solo Beatles.Feedback:
i know you're going to hate me for this, but aside from mccartney & ram i am just totally indifferent to paul's solo work - although i've softened to it in the sense that it doesn't make me cringe like it used to. & yes, i've heard more than just those two albums - i've been listening to the beatles since i popped out of the womb - so my opinions aren't as totally unfounded as plenty of anti-macca people's are. (not trying to sound pre-emptively defensive, just backing myself up.) however, my love for those two records is pretty great, & i believe the highlights of them ("every night," "that would be something," "junk," "back seat of my car," "maybe i'm amazed," "teddy boy," "heart of the country") are just as great as anything in lennon's solo canon. oh, & if i hear "dance tonight" one more time, i'm going to blow my brains out.
I actually listened to his debut LP yesterday afternoon. Not an hour before this was posted, spooky. That Would Be Something is probably my favourite on the album. Love Ram & Band On The Run the most. A great Double CD Anthology of a True Great..
"Dance Tonight" is dire. If that's an indication of his current genius I think he should quietly retire to his Scottish island. I'm fairly indifferent to all his LP's but I do have a fondness for the majority of his singles from the 70's.
The best thing he and John had was each other. C Moon is awful, but Maybe I'm Amazed is a great vocal.
Pretty undeniable stuff here.
I'm not very familiar with Wings, but looks good.
great stuff
