Scent of a Murderer ... of Patrick Snskind's Perfume
Comment:
I read Patrick Snskind's novel and then watched part of the movie. The film just couldn't capture the essence of the book as Stanley Kubrick put forth when he called the book "unfilmable."Flawlessly written and drenched in irony, "Perfume" tells a haunting tale of a man reminiscent of the Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, and even Faust. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is one of the most chilling characters in literature. I did manage to understand his all-consuming passion, much to the author's credit. The decadance of 18th century France simply comes alive. But "Perfume" is a bizarre read, almost a fairy tale of terror.
The songs selected are some that might serve as a soundtrack to the novel. The film already has its own.
Quiz: The exotic monster that is Grenouille early on sees himself as an insect. Which one? Correct answer wins the mix, tracked and with artwork.

Feedback:
Oh my. I actually know the answer to the quiz, but I'll let someone who liked the book answer. I never could stand it myself, although I agree Snskind created one heck of a protagonist in Grenouille. (Though this mix looks jolly good, I'm sure it's better than the OST.)
Have read the book and loved it but can't remember which insect it is. Read Suskind's The Pigeon, if you haven't already, a compelling tale of irrational fear.
This is highly excellent. And the answer is NOT a cockroach. (For all you Gregor Samsa fans out there...)
I need to listen to this, I'm unfamiliar with a big chunk of it. The cover art is beautiful though. And I love 3 and 16..
Your mix is perfect for lovers of perfume, but the story of Grenouille and his victims was far too savage for me.
I am all over this...Both the music and book, with which I'm unfamiliar, but these liner notes have succeeded in making me very curious...These tracks look extremely ambitious, even without the literary companionship...Great work!
this looks really interesting.
by the way, i received your mixes & i would be hard pressed to name any mixes that i've ever received more beautifully or lovingly put together. & the music? top-notch. thanks a whole bunch, i'm positive this is great too.

Great book, so-so movie, incredible mix!
No nothing of the book or film. But, I will know this in short order. I absolutely love that Tool song, btw.
this looks great. I would love to do an alt mix with you. My motherboard died so I'm disabled for about a week but after that let's do it.
Aw, no "Scentless Apprentice"? :-) This is stellar, actually; a fitting sibling to the excellent book.<3 Sara
Hmm. Never had much interest in the book or movie, but this mix looks good. Like the opener, as well as the R & L Thompson and Gene Vincent tracks.
sublime :)
I guess the answer is a tick
I guess the answer is a tick
We have a winner in the quiz. A tick is the correct bug, not to be confused with the bug that is infesting aotm these days.
i just stumbled across my copy of perfume. perhaps i'll reread it. i haven't forgotten about you. if i'm a week behind on my comments you know i am way behind schedule for everything.
