Comment:

The third in a series of mixes focusing on the jangly guitar pop that dominated the college radio scene back in the mid-80's. (See also Kick Out The Jangles, Motherf***** and For Those About To Jangle, We Salute You.) Once again, some of the most prominent purveyors of the genre are here (R.E.M., The Connells, The Reivers, Guadalcanal Diary, Dumptruck), but we also veer into some other territory as well (i.e. the more punk-ish Big Dipper, garage-y L.A. bands Dream Syndicate and Green On Red, token non-American acts the Go-Betweens and Robyn Hitchcock - and thanks to Rob C. for the Go-Betweens). Also a few appearances from artists who made bigger names for themselves later on (28th Day features indie rock singer-songwriter superstar Barbara Manning; Fig. 4 was fronted by Tobin Sprout, later of Guided by Voices [and with GbV frontman Robert Pollard on backing vox]).There is a bit more variation in sonic quality than I'd like, as some of this comes from minty-fresh cd reissues (the Reivers' track, already hauntingly beautiful, sounds drop-dead stunning), while other tracks, left to the dustbin of history, are old vinyl conversions (the disc-closing Squalls track is, sadly, a cassette conversion downloaded from the band's website as a low-bitrate mp3, but is such a perfect encapsulation of the era that I had to include it here). Great stuff all around.

Even though our comment relationship is rather one-sided ;-) I like these mixes because it reminds me of what I missed when I had my Dylan blinders on.But even wannabe wood hippies like moi loved Green Grow The Rushes and Robyn Hitchcock. I am glad I learned to love most of the rest, esp. CVB later in life.

this looks fantastic - one of my very favorite subgenres of rock & roll - nothing sounds better to me than that jingly-jangly guitar strum - but, & i'm sorry i have to say this, where the hell are the smiths? maybe they're not a jangle-pop band in the strictest sense, but they definitely had a sound & aesthetic very closley associated with the scene. johnny marr didn't so much as invent the sound as he did pretty much perfect it. "heaven knows i'm miserable now" is a dead-ringer for any of these mixes. still a great series, though...

Another fine '80s flashback featuring quality artists and their clever titles.

I think Anthony has a point but perhaps the Smiths didn't dominate college radio though I'd find that difficult to believe. Speed The Plough, Firehose, Go Betweens, enough to make one salivate.

Looks great! This could pass for one of my late 80s college radio playlists, with acts like Dumptruck, 28th Day, Guadalcanal Diary, CVB, The Bongos and Game Theory -- just to name a few. I crown you the king of Jangle -- a Rickenbacker strap will serve as your sash. Check out my latest mix for another side of 80s music :)

Terrific mix! Count me in as a fellow fan of the jangle-pop. I've been listening to a lot of 28th Day, Bongos, Dream Syndicate, Feelies, Yo La Tengo, Scruffy the Cat, and Robyn lately... and I've loved a lot of the others since, well, the days of 80s college radio!

Really like the looks of this: Camper Van Beethoven, Connells, Guadalcanal Diary, Yo La Tengo and others.... And though I personally can't stand "Green Grow The Rushes," I certainly see how it fits here.

Nice. Digging the Green on Red, Camper and Go-Betweens (you're welcome, sir) tracks, especially.

This has certainly whetted my appetite. Your gushing of the Reivers track made me just check out the price on Amazon U.K - 30 Pounds! Steep. Anyway, this all looks great.
