Comment:

My friend Mike the other week confessed to me that he's never really seen the appeal of the great (but often indifferently recorded) Richard Thompson; as a result, I promised him a disc with "10 Richard Thompson songs that will change your life." Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending upon one's perspective) I couldn't stop there and filled an entire disc with such tracks, leaving off even more due to space considerations. Although this alone isn't designed to replace my earlier (2002) two-disc compilation of the same name, I'm planning on eventually expanding this to two or three discs for my own use. In the meantime, though, this really does collect all of *my* favorite RT moments. I know it's heresy to a lot of listeners that I included solo versions of such Linda- or Sandy-sung classics as "Genesis Hall," "A Heart Needs a Home" and "I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight," but for some reason I prefer his phrasing on the tracks in question to theirs (if not his voice, necessarily). Last tracks cut: "The Great Valerio," "The Cavalry Cross," "A Love You Can't Survive," "Tear-Stained Letter" and "Cold Kisses [Naked version]."

I have I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight LP and then I went no further with Mr.Thompson. I will definitely get back to him, not sure when though.

I'm guessing I left a similar comment on your prior mix, but, just to reiterate: I tend to group Thompson in alongside Van Morrison, Tom Waits, and post-60s Dylan -- hugely respected artists whom I know I should like but, alas, just can't seem to enjoy. I like a few of his songs ("1952 VBL" is killer), and I saw him live once and was thoroughly awed, but every time I try to play one of his albums I lose interest along the way.
Of course, one's tastes change (one might say mellow) over time, which is why in recent years I've been listening to a lot more Americana and folk-ish singer/songwriter stuff than I used to, so I'm sure that every couple years I'll sit down with Thompson (and Morrison, and Dylan, and Waits, etc.) and see if I've changed my mind.

Having worked in the Speciality section of the record store I used to work at for a while, I got thrugh all Thompsons albums - and liked them jus fine. Nice work.

Oops, forget to close that out, Victor could use some tutoring in Mr. Thompson's work. You have definitely hit most of my highlights as well.

being a Richard Thompson acolyte myself I must praise you for this great summation... I'm sorry to see that Great Valerio didn't make the cut, but I'm a sucker for his late 60's (with Fairport)/early 70's stuff... kudos on choosing the live Richard-sung version of Genesis Hall over the original

I admire this single artist choice, but I would have needed four discs (at least) to pick from his body of work. Thompson has released some great official "bootleg" albums through the years via his website, of which I have all. Some are no longer available. I recorded him on two occasions myself - once in Massachusetts many years ago and again two years ago in Knoxville.

Believe it or not but I'm only recently getting into everything Mr. Thompson. I don't know why I couldn't have seen this mix, like, three years ago or something because I've been missing out, man! Love what I know here, especially that FC track. Also, loving 6 to 8.
