I'm not a huge fan of gimmicky theme mixes (22 songs with Booger in the title...). While cute in the abstract, they don't always make for the best listening experiences -- and, as purists, we should always make the sound & vibe of the mix paramount, right? -- as the mere fact that you can find two dozen songs about cats doesn't mean they're going to sound any good when played together. That said, they're invariably fun to make, and they do force you, by sheer necessity, to reach for parts of your collection you don't normally turn to when making mixes. (Hence, I've made a few myself, capitalizing on expansive themes of Cross-USA Travel and that old chestnut Days Of The Week.) This one here came out ok, with a decent blend of old favorites and left-field selections. Had to discard a few (Pixies' "No. 13 Baby," R.E.M.'s "Seven Chinese Brothers," Byrds' "Eight Miles High," etc.), and didn't quite have the space for Grant Hart's "Twenty Five Forty One", but the final mix plays fairly well. Divorced from the running order constraints I might have opted to mix it differently (a few too many front-loaded classics and meandering tunes at the end), but such is the world of the dreaded Theme Mix.

I'm with you on the theme mixes, but I have been guilty myself as well. Queen segueing into R.E.M. is something I surely must try some time. Replacements as a bridge from Tupelo to Pistols makes perfect sense.

i concur with your liner notes whole-heartedly, & also with derek on the wonderful work-out of that 'mats thru uncle tupelo & the sex pitols segue. 2, 4-8, 13, the aforementioned 15-17 & 19 are all hard-hitters for me.

I know just what you mean about pointless gimmickry; I like to think a theme mix justifies itself if you're making it for someone who has a special interest in the subject, or for a special occasion; other times an imposed theme can be a real mixed blessing. At least here it adds up to a number of good tunes . . .

Well stated notes that won't get any argument from me, and actually the major reason I haven't attempted anything like this myself.It's a shame you ditched 7 & 8, but more than made up for it with the Queen/R.E.M. replacements. The 13-17 run looks amazing, and 19 is my favorite Stones song. Very well done....
I like theme mixes. I don't like things to run smoothly, I want jagged clashes of hostile styles to reflect the abstactness of reality. And I was about to do exactly the same mix and would have used tracks 13, 16, 19 and 23. A fine effort.
Mix it the way you like it! It's how the inspiration hits you--a single artist, covers, a theme, a style, a birthday gift--and how you feel about making the mix. Well crafted playlist, as usual.

This does seem like a great listening experience, despite my general aversion to these types of things (that you share, according to your notes).
Hmmm... I am not exactly AVERSE to the themed mix ;), but this looks good with or without the gimmick. The 8-14 run looks especially appealing.

The answer? 576. Plenty of my favorite "numbers" here: Game THeory, Big Star, Reps, early REM, Schoolhouse Rock... Sure, this theme has been done, but never bettered. I was working on my booger theme mix, but I think I'm going to scrap it now.
i don't have any problem with theme mixes, as long as the resulting mix plays well straight thru. in this case, i think mixing up the track order once the tracks were selected would have been ok.

Now you're stuck! Someday there will have to be a volume 2 (25-48) and 3 and so on. Love the Amy Rigby track. I met her around the time of her breakup with Will Rigby (drummer for Steve Earle) and I'm sure she played 20 questions a few times with him.
