Comment:
Well, on KathrynandRupert's recommen-dation, I took some time off and had me a little lie-down. But now I'm back and I'm refreshed! The big question was, after delivering my big concept mix, the story of Johnny (MIX #85: All He Wanted Was To Be Free, And That's The Way It Turned Out To Be), what the hell does one do for an encore?! Well, for better or worse, I guess it's something along the lines of what you're seeing here! (And I've got MIX #88 laid down as well, so I've obviously been making up for lost time!) This time around, there's no big "rock opera" or concept or anything, just the usual rocking, moodswinging panoramic overview of the musical landscape of my mind's eye. (Or does that sound way too pretentiously highfalutin'? You'd rather I go back to pizza metaphors...? Ha, ha!)This time around, let's give it up for the ladies! Quite a few women in the lineup this time around - namely Janis Joplin, Johnette Napolitano, Annie Haslam, Danielle De Niese, Chrissie Hynde and Annie Lennox! Not part of the plan, it just happened that way. Usually I gravitate toward the heavier - often metallic - power-chord crunch side of things, and that just so happens to be largely male-dominated. (Although as you all know, the likes of Heart's Wilson sisters, L7, Patti, Janis, etc., can certainly rival the hardest stuff of any of their male peers!)
The spirit of my protagonist Johnny still hangs over the proceedings, and as with a good portion of what's on MIX #81 onwards, there's a bit here that at one point or another was a conten-der for Johnny's story. I've obviously been on kind of a life / death / love / sex / drugs / rock 'n' roll / war / violence / transcen-dence / hereafter sort of kick lately! But after this mix and the one after this, I think it's safe to say I'll have likely exorcised the last of Johnny from my sy-stem!
NOTES, THOUGHTS, COMMENTS, EXPLANATIONS OF INTENT, AND ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS UNASKED:
1) Amazing Grace / New World Symphony: Instrumental booken-ds from Yes bassist Chris Squire.
2) Brand New Cadillac / The Shining Path / Slide It In: I think that Manic Street Preachers' bassist Nicky Wire would be most amused - perhaps even flattered - to find one of his solo numbers sandwiched between two of his favorite bands, The Clash and Whitesnake! (I know The Clash is the common-denominator favorite of all three Manics, but to my knowledge Nick is the only Whitesnake fan within the group!)
3) Vide Cor Meum: A first for the Pazuzu Mix series - the first operatic aria to show up on one of my mixes! Okay, okay, it's a bit of a faux-opera piece, having been written for a horror movie. But still, I don't think there have been many operatic pieces - "real" or ersatz - based on the work of Dante Alighieri! :-)
4) Miss Misery / Mister Crowley: Completely unintentional. Merely a happy accident, I swear to God!
5) A Whiter Shade Of Pale / Reflections Of Ch-arles Brown: I trust this would be self-explanatory to anyone familiar with both songs (particular those out there who are familiar with Bach!).
6) Pictures Of Matchstick Men / 4th Of July: Perhaps unexpected, and not a really obvious transition by any means, but I just thought that it made sense rhythmically!
7) Hymn To Her / Into The West / New World Symphony: I'd like to dedicate the closing trio of Disc #2 to the memory of my mother, who passed away in the spring of 2005 after a long and hard eight-year fight with breast cancer.
8) Slide It In / The Needle And The Damage Done: A completely unintentional bad pun. Take it or leave it! [*wink*]
Feedback:
This is a great mix, I really like the audioslave/pearl jam pairing. A nice companion to your "rock opera."
As ever, an intense, deeply thought out mix. Still listening to the saga of "Johnny" . . .
One of my favorite Renaissance tracks (props to Keith Relf) highlights this tour of a mix. Cherish the ladies.
