Comment:
The first of three discs attempting to chronicle the long and storied career of one of rock's most subtly subversive iconoclasts, compiled for my friend Kristi's birthday yesterday. This disc spans 1970-78. I was planning on including a track or two from Kippington Lodge, Nick's '60s psych-pop combo... and then I actually listened to the songs. ;-) (Not his best moments, thanks primarily to the lead vocalist/lyricist, who was *not* Nick.) As a result, this starts off with the skewed Grateful Dead leanings of the early Brinsleys, progresses through their pub rock period, and ends near the conclusion of Nick's breathlessly raspberry-pulling first rush of solo singles and his classic debut, the aptly-titled Jesus of Cool. Last tracks cut from this volume: "I Can See Her Face" (Kippington Lodge), "Don't Lose Your Grip on Love," "Nervous on the Road (But Can't Stay at Home)," "Why Do We Hurt the One We Love," "The Look That's in Your Eye Tonight," "There's a Cloud in My Heart," "Give Me Back My Love" (all Brinsley Schwartz), "Let's Go to the Disco" (the Disco Brothers), "Here She Comes Now (demo)," "Born a Woman," and "Halfway to Paradise" (Nick Lowe). Thanks to Pop Kulcher, doowad and lo-fi jr for their help in pulling together material for this volume.Feedback:
Security was tight indeed, I just had to let my browser sit for a minute and this did work. And this definitely didn't let me down, good decision on Kippington Lodge. "I Knew the Bride" is tops for me here, but I love it all.
I'm not very familiar with this. But at least looks very interesting and nice as well.
Excellent! I've been a huge fan for a looooong time.
This is my favorite period of Nick, as I'm partial to Jesus of Cool/Pure Pop For Now People as one of the finest indie pop albums ever. I also love that first Brinsley album, however odd its faux-Dead/CSN sound may have been. Might have added a couple other Brinsley tracks (and I do believe that one Kippington Lodge track you cut was sung by Lowe), but I'm with you on this one.
i really, really love nick lowe - my appreciation for him has expanded by leaps & bounds over the past couple years. he should certainly be praised as a saint of rock & roll at this point. razor sharp picks here - &, honestly, could there be a more breathlessly gorgeous closer? i think not.
Clearly I love all of this. Good work.
I remember once seeing Nick Lowe clowning around, singing "I love the sound of my own voice" - his sense of humor is a big part of his appeal, for me.
Another great single artist compilation = another great "sound" education. Thanks!
I know most of this and little of the 2 other discs. If links are forthcoming I'll definitely be checking out all 3. Another labour of love. Tk 14, predictably maybe, is my fave here...
His so-lowe stuff is probably the best and I'm with Sammy on my favourite track although Breaking Glass runs it close.
A Nick Lowe box? Fantastic! I'd love to do a trade for this.
