Comment:

Neil LaBute, who was raised in Spokane, Washington, is a filmwriter, director and playwright. He entered film school at Brigham Young University where he also met actor Aaron Eckhart, who would later play leading roles in several of his films. He produced a number of plays that pushed the envelope of what was acceptable at the conservative religious university, some of which were shut down after their premieres.

His two latest plays, Some Girl(s) and This Is How It Goes, are both about the lies men and women tell each other. They come with his signature caveats: trust no one, and there are no happy endings. "A good relationship equals a shitty story," LaBute says. "Drama's fundamental building block is conflict. You have to pitch people at one another. So my job is to look for ways to ruin a perfectly good day for people."

LaBute has received high praise from critics for his edgy and unsettling portrayals of human relationships. "In the Company of Men" portrays two misogynist businessmen (one played by Eckhart) cruelly plotting to romance and emotionally destroy a deaf woman. His next film, "Your Friends & Neighbors," with an ensemble cast including Eckhart and Ben Stiller, was a shockingly honest portrayal of the sex lives of three suburban couples.
Nurse Betty (2000) is an American black comedy film, starring RenTe Zellweger, Morgan Freeman, Chris Rock and Greg Kinnear. It tells the tale of Betty, a sweet and innocent Kansas waitress who is a fanatic fan of daytime soap opera. Betty loses her grip on reality when she witnesses her no-good husband being scalped by assassins, and starts obsessively pursuing her favourite soap actor.
Next came "Possession," based on the novel of the same name by A. S. Byatt. The film tells the story of two scholars, played by Eckhart and Gwyneth Paltrow, who investigate the affair of fictional Victorian era poet Randolph Henry Ash, described in letters between him and another fictional poet, Christabel LaMotte.

LaBute's latest film is "The Wicker Man," an American version of a British cult classic. His first horror film, it starred Nicolas Cage and Ellen Burstyn, and was subject to scathing critical reviews and mediocre box office. I can't say as I blame them. It wasn't nearly as good as the original.
His latest, "Lakeview Terrace," is scheduled for release later this year and has to do with an interracial couple being hounded by a neighborhood watchdog.

Only 3 of the 21 songs in this mix were on official soundtracks of LaBute's movies. The others help to tell the thematic story of his work as a filmmaker.

Quiz - Nurse Betty is a waitress in a diner, who pours coffee behind her back while her eyes are glued to her favorite soap opera - titled what?

As if the Wicker Man needed a remake. Don't understand this obsession with remaking classic films like Alfie and the Italian Job, the new versions are always inferior. This mix however needs no remaking.

yeah, there is a remake trend nowadays in Hollywood and most of the time the new versions suck... hell, even Tarantino plagiarizes, but he does it with panache, as Kill Bill 1 & 2 may be a remake of a japanese flick with tosses of other obscure asian/70s b-movies, but it looks more like a heartfelt homage to them... as for the mix, it's spot on, just brilliant

This looks like it's a great big pile of fun, Dean! Nice work! Oh, and by the way, the soap is called "A Reason to Love," and I think Susan Lucci is on it now...

SAG is a winner with the correct quiz answer. I could use a nurse right now, having just picked up a flu bug and, of course, feeling sorry for myself.

Get well soon, and watch some great movies while you recuperate.

I think you're being kind to the Wicker Man remake, Dean. It was borderline incomprehensible. Great mix!

Excellent work, as always. I often go first to your "liner notes", which are always relevant, informative and extremely interesting. I've had a love/hate relationship with LaBute since "In The Company Of Men", which I found extremely brutal while at the same time compelling...They say the same about bad car wrecks, I suppose. He, like you, clearly represents a formidable talent.

Great work.

Damn! Double Damn!! I knew the answer to the quiz, and was too late. I like the film (Nurse Betty) very much, though I'm not aware of the Tv show outside that film.
And the mix? Grand as ever..
