Comment:
A bit of (mostly) mellow Americana here, some twangin' & strummin' for quiet, humid evenings on the porch or long hauls down the interstate. Some of the obvious purveyors of the Americana/No Depression genre (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, Jayhawks, Whiskeytown), plus some more traditional-sounding country-infused pop (Neko Case, Jenny Lewis) and modern Southern rock (Drive-By Truckers, Dexateens, Band of Horses, My Morning Jacket). But I've also broadened the scope to include a wealth of mellow, mildly-psychedelic rustic folk-rock which has a little less twang but a comparable vibe (Kingsbury Manx, Great Lake Swimmers, Calexico, Iron & Wine), plus some Byrds-y psychedelic jangle (Beachwood Sparks, some Brits partial to US country music (Stones, Elvis) and Howe Gelb's unique Tom Waits-fueled gospel (great, great album, by the way). Not a lot of rocking here (the Gomez tune a rare break from the sombre tone), but I've been playing it in the car all week and it's a keeper.
Feedback:
Needless to say, this is absolutely my kind of mix. The Wad always calls the Stones his favorite American Country & Western band.
It is time I dug out that first Kingsbury Manx LP and gave it a spin. Lovely.
This looks fantastic.
I love this. It looks like somthing I would make, only better, since your knowledge in music far surpasses mine. If it wasn't so windy here, I'd definately play this while enjoying a little drink on the porch.
A set of wonderful songs. Old Howe doesn't get to play around here as often as he should.
Wow. This is mostly new stuff by bands I know well and a lot I don't. "Torn & Frayed" certainly doesn't get the play these days! I'm betting that if Howie isn't in the mixes, then Giant Sand typically isn't either? Intriguing!
we seem to be on the same wavelength, marc, as this kind of stuff has featured heavily in my listening rotation recently. 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 20-24 are all scorchers in my book.
great, somne stuff I actually haven't heard, better check them up
Love the Stones, E.C., Sparks, Gelb, Scuds, Wilco and VU tracks. I must confess, however (ironically enough, since you and anthony have become more interested in it), that I almost never listen to stuff that sounds like this anymore.
AotM'er French Connection and his lovely wife and I saw Mother Hips just by chance in NYC last May! Great mix! Any link?
I'm likin' this one a lot. Especially that "mellow, mildly-psychedelic rustic folk-rock ".
