Comment:
God, I hate eighties music. Well, I don't actually mean that, but I do hate what most people think of as "eighties music." If I didn't hear "Karma Chameleon" or "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" ever again, I think I'd die a happy man. I don't even want to get into the late eighties, when the New Kids ruled the earth and Right Said Fred were at number one for a solid month. Still, as the DFA has proved time and time again, there was lots of good stuff happening back then. Consider this, then, a retort to the "Big Eighties" crowd. I've got lots of weird, twisted grooves and creepy production here. It's not stuff you wanna listen to in a day-glo headband. It's interesting how much of this stuff comes from the very early eighties, though. Things got weird as punk dissolved, I guess. If you wanna look more of this stuff up, I heartily support the "New York Noise" comps put out by Soul Jazz and "Post Punk" put out by Rough Trade. Oh, and I hope the shift from Suicide to Dead Can Dance isn't too jarring or anything.Feedback:
My 80s music was Empire Burlesque and Southern Accents, but I do have a soft place for that Soft Cell.
good stuff.
I loved the 80's just because of music like this. Every time I hear Tainted Love, I want to dye my hair purple again.
Yeah, 80's music has a bad rap by people who only listened to spoon fed mtv/corporate radio picks. It was a big decade with tons of diverse music just like every other decade. For example I was listening to tons of paisley underground and early roots rock guitar stuff which comes to my mind first as 80s music. And the NY downtown scene of no wave and avant funk. That "big eighties" stuff was just a tiny part of the decade's music that somehow got the big label.
Totally agree. The 80s were The Golden Palominos, Icehouse, New Order, The Cult, The Cure, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny, Gipsy Kings, The Fixx, Alison Moyet, Bob James & Earl Klugh, The Proclaimers, Sonic Youth, and so much more! Thanks for offering us the "other" side of the era.
most of this is great, esp the last seven and well the rest too, every mix that's includes PIL is top in my world
