Women of Jazz
Comment:
Who better to begin with than the immortal Billie Holiday, whose sultry vocals straddled the ever-blurry jazz-blues line? Holiday's co-composition "God Bless the Child" showcases her at her best, while her lynching-inspired "Strange Fruit" — at the time deemed too controversial for a major label — remains haunting more than 65 years later. Female vocalists, it seems — many of whom straddle the same jazz-blues line — have an uncanny ability to tap into an emotional core that's generally eluded male jazz singers.
