The Strokes
Comment:
The Strokes burned bright and bold for three straight albums, then took a battery-recharging break before bounding back into the spotlight with Angles. But don’t think they weren’t keeping busy during that “downtime.” Julian Casablancas flirted with Eurodisco beats without abandoning his rock ’n’ roll attitude on “11th Dimension.” Albert Hammond, Jr. unveiled “In Transit,” a perpetual-motion machine fueled by frothy, new wave-tinged indie pop. Hey, whose gritty guitar licks are rocking things up on Regina Spektor’s “Better”? None other than moonlighting Stroke Nick Valensi’s. Even the rhythm section got into the act, with bassist Nikolai Fraiture forming the punningly named Nickel Eye (“Brandy of the Damned”) and beatmeister Fab Moretti leading the lo-fi Little Joy (“The Next Time Around”).
