Comment:
2008/10/18 -x- nelson, b.c.this mix commemorates my summer departure from baffin island after nearly 7 years. a surprise appreciation day was held in my honour back on july 4th (thanks em & co. !) and i received a bunch of mix cd's. as i bounced from calgary to nelson to vancouver island and back again, those mixes rotated through the rental car stereo.
canadian artists are featured on tracks 1, 2, 3, and 7. i was introduced to quviasuliqpunga by various winnipeg artists thanks to kate nova's blog. andrea simms-karp of ottawa was featured on em. x's mix, and easy tiger is my fellow iqaluit ex-pat malcolm's band, based in halifax.
besides track 2, my iqalungmiut buddies also supplied me with tracks 5 (etienne d.), 8 (laura b.), 13 (olivia b.), and 22 (chris w.). the detroit cobras and neko have shared billing on the bloodshot label with kelly hogan (track 14) and the old 97's (track 15).
i had bought advance tickets to the august 23d vancouver stop of the blue rodeo concert tour in the centre of stanley park, where the sadies 0pened the show. i also had an opportunity to take in the calgary version of the 2008 warped tour on august 6th (accounting for tracks 9, 11, 16, and 23), and before i left iqaluit, i enjoyed namgar's all-too brief set at the alianait! music festival on june 21st.
track 4 was performed as a campfire singalong song by anna and joanne on our tofino wedding-recovery camping trip from august 16-18th. i thought that the sleeper track was a nice britpop response to fellow brits art brut. i got my new cellphone in september, and learned plenty about polyphonic ringtones as i attempted to convert 'haus der drei sonnen' into a midi format and then transfer it to the phone.
track 10 was supplied as a bonus video on the 'shimotsuma monogatari' (kamikaze girls) dvd. track 18 is another dvd lift, this time from 'sunshine' - there is a rumour that the long-awaited official soundtrack may escape legal limbo and finally be available this fall. track 19 is from the first 'infernal affairs' film out of hong kong (the basis for 'the departed'). track 20 is from this summer's 'kung fu panda' soundtrack, and track 21 is a final dvd rip from the manga-inspired 'nana'. also inspired by that manga was a punk tribute album (before the movie !) where i gleefully grabbed the great bivattchee track 24.
p.s. i'm always happy to entertain mix trade offers !
the mix cover is a photo of the iqaluit bay from my last night in town (playing poker, natch !)

Love the Ray Price and Old 97s most of all.
I'm anxious to hear this. I like the Art Brut track very much and there's plenty to discover.
Very varied mix. I really like that Kelly Hogan song.
