Comment:
Threw this together this weeke-nd after picking up a few more of the recent reissues, but held off on posting so Rob could get his up first. Like Rob, the 'Mats were a huge part of my life in the 80s. While the one true life-changing band for me back then was R.E.M. (I credit Murmur and Reckoning with my musical awakening, or re-awakening, back in my mid-80s college dj years), the Replacements were a close second. The primary distinction you'll see between this & Rob's mix, or course, is that I lean more heavily on the band's mid-period and later work. While the first album has its moments ("Shiftless When Idle" in particular, beyond having one of the greatest song titles ever, was an immediate indication that Paul Westerberg was a songwriter to be reckoned with), I'm not a huge fan of the hardcore-heavy sound of that album (or the follow-up Stink EP. Hootenanny, for all its novelty tracks and tossed-off quirkiness, was a huge step forward, but for me the real transcen-dence occurred with Let It Be, an album that is 90% genius. I'm almost as fond of the next one, Tim (and songs like "Bastards of Young," "Left of the Dial," and "Little Mascara" are probably my favorite Westerberg tracks). After that they lost some of their edge, though I think Paul continued to write a handful of absolutely brilliant tracks per album. Here's where I differ most from Rob, as I think that brilliance carried right through the final proper Replacements album. While the production of the last two albums was slick and the performance was a bit staid, there are still flashes of stunning songwriting.Like Rob, I've been pretty underwhelmed with Paul's solo career. While there are some decent songs here and there, I've just never been enthralled by any of this work, though I'm not sure if this is an indication of diminishing quality or just that my love of the Replacements was tied up in that particular moment in time when I was in love with the band. I did include one solo track, as it's roughly contemporaneous with the demise of the band and, let's face it, a great song. The two last tracks here, recent recordings with Paul & Tommy, come from the greatest hits compilation earlier this year. Neither is essential, but they provide a decent enough coda for the band.
Feedback:
Here's the cover:
Kudos to both, I probably lean more towards this period as well.
I'd have to agree with your assertion on Let It Be, namely because I really like the hardcore earlier stuff and Westerberg's penchant for tunes, and I feel like that album was a wonderful middle ground that allowed some room for both at the same time. The collection looks great...glad to see "Take Me Down To The Hospital" show up in there.
Have to admit, though I know of em, I have very little by The Replacements, so all I can assume is that the mix is up to the usual standards.
My problem with the last two albums isn't only the godawful '80s sound (Don't Tell a Soul) or the completely flat, listener-supported radio sound (All Shook Down), it's the lifeless performances on those records and the fact that Paul's songwriting (to me, anyway) became so self-consciously, stiltedly "Westerbergian" that it all but destroyed the tossed-off brilliance displayed on the early work. I absolutely adore Tim, love Let It Be just slightly less, and even like Pleased to Meet Me a helluva lot, but to me, the first album and e.p. represent what I like most about the band. (I'm with you 100% on "Shiftless When Idle," though.) I like this mix, obviously, but can't fathom what wouldn't make you sail over the moon for the "You're Getting Married" demo at the e*d of the Stink reissue or "Go" from that same album. (Hootenanny, btw, doesn't hold up well for me after all of these years, despite the presence of "Color Me Impressed," "Within Your Reach" and "Treatment Bound.") At any rate, just my two cents. And it's always cool to see where our tastes diverge. I was, however, kidding about you not "scooping" me, although I appreciate the gesture, good sir.
I love your Replacements mix too!
