Comment:
A straightforward chronological mix from one of the most noteworthy acts of the decade, if one that I find be a bit overrated. MMJ has undoubtedly taken on the mantle of classic rock radio in a big way. Listen to one of their more booming anthems (i.e. "Aluminum Park," "I'm Amazed," "Off The Record," "Dancefloors," etc.) at high volume and it's like hearing Led Zeppelin or Born To Run-era Springsteen pouring out of the radio circa mid-70s. Not surprisingly, they come across even better live, where their big, sprawling sound gets a worthy workout. That said, I'm less partial to their quieter, slower songs, which, while often doing a perfectly fine job of bridging country-tinged Americana, blue-eyed soul and radio-ready AOR, can also be a slog to get through. As a result, for all the band's strengths and well-won reputation, none of their albums are consistently entertaining from start to finish (though 2003's It Still Moves and its follow up Z come closest). As is often the case, though, a band with inconsistent albums but a handful of solid tracks per album makes for the best mix, and this is one of my recent favorites. Nothing too far off the beaten track. No EP's, demos (which they've often released), live tracks, and few ballads. Just the best straight-out rock & roll tracks from each of their five albums to date.
Feedback:
Here's the cover:
Well tailored...worthy of trying on any time of day (my weak effort at being punny).
Again, I have to agree. MMJ is quite overrated in my opinion but you can always find a handful of tracks even in banal bands that are worth a re-listen.
Not a huge fan of them overall, but both Jim James (nee Olliges) and Patrick Hallahan grew up in my neighborhood and went to the same grade school as me (though more than a few years after). My younger brother (who did go to school with them) swears by them but I mostly just respect them as local boys having done well for themselves. Still, some of their songs are quite good, and their appearance in Elizabethtown was a hoot....
