Fats Domino
Comment:
Fats Domino may have ruled rock ’n’ roll radio everywhere from the Bay Area to the Big Apple, but he was New Orleans born and bred, and that fact shone through in every ivory he ever tickled. But sometimes his roots were right up there on the surface, like when he lovingly laid into Professor Longhair’s second-line standard “Mardi Gras In New Orleans,” or banged out the Big Easy bounce of “Hey! La Bas Boogie,” belting some Creole lyrics along the way. And even when he dug into an old Fats Waller swing tune like “What’s the Reason I’m Not Pleasing You,” he simply couldn’t resist spicing it up with some sassy Crescent City swing.
