Comment:

Well, I guess this is kind of a landmark of sorts: MIX #150...DISC #300! However, otherwise it's kind of business as usual for me. Nothing particularly special, conceptual or out of the ordinary this time around. I already did my American Mix with #147, so I'm kind of tapped out in the grand concept department! :)

Anyway, two eliminations today:
146. R.E.M. - Accelerate (2008) (#150 - 2/4/09)
147. Boston - Boston (1976) (#150 - 2/4/09)

There is one thing about DISC #2 (or #300, if you will!) that's perhaps worth mentioning: The overall vibe feels rather dark and vaguely apocalyptic, if with a bit of hopeful uplift at the conclusion. That certainly wasn't part of the plan, though, and only on rare occasions can I even claim to have a plan at all. I just come up with these sequences of songs in my head that I think would sound really cool in a mix, and it's only on listening to playback on my CD walkman that I get any sort of effect. Awfully funny thing, the subconscious is, but it's certainly a hell of an ally for a mixer to have! [*wink*]

Ann - Ron Asheton: R.I.P. Such a bummer, man! It kind of feels like "Kil-ler" Kane all over again... :(

Cathedral Spires - Let me just say that I'm not a particularly big fan of the Judas Priest period without Rob Halford, when Tim "Ripper" Owens took over for two albums and tours. So disappointed was I with 1998's Jugulator that I haven't even checked out the follow-up, Demolition, yet. But I do love Jugulator's doomy, epic closing track Cathedral Spires, and I thought it would work as part of the closing sequence...

Sweet Lew - This rarity from the Lost Dogs compilation just happens to be the only Pearl Jam track on which bassist Jeff Ament takes the microphone! The lyrics are inspired by Jeff's meeting with his childhood hero, basketball great Lew Alcidor, which proved to be somewhat disappointing!

Machine Gun Etiquette < New Rose - A pair of Damned covers for all the old-school punks out there! :) I actually don't have anything by the Damned in my collection. Perhaps I will correct this oversight at some point in the future...

That Audislave track is one of my favorites ... "never too late with my halo." And the guitar solo is simply amazing. I was surprised to hear that To Morello credits Tony Iommi as his major influence. This mix looks very good, special theme or not.
