Comment:
This mix is an exemplar of a classroom assignment in which I ask students to make mix tapes, trade them anonymously, and write a paper about them. Students are asked to make a mix that would introduce themselves to a stranger. "Schitzoid" attempts to bring together the varied kinds of music I enjoy under the themes of water, love, and spirituality. The songs are modelled on an average Saturday, and progress from morning waking, to mid-day (with r&b), to waking (and rocking), to getting ready to "go out" (Danzig), to dancing at the club (industrial), to getting home and going to bed (chill-out stuff). It's a fun challenge to set for yourself: How would you introduce yourself to a stranger through music? --Josh in Minneapolis.
Feedback:
What a cool assignment, I wish I'd had a teacher like you!
How do you stop kids from getting offended and you getting sued?
REPLY TO THE HERMIT: Good question. The answer is that I treat my students like peers, and ask them to behave themselves (we go collectively to a "rock" show too, so this request is a must). Most folks are excited enough to be studying music at all, so they are careful. The assignment and its guidelines are online at:
