Tomorrow's Hits Today: A Tribute to KJET
Comment:
This is a mix dedicated to radio station that existed for a very short time. From 1982 to 1988, Seattle's KJET played new music, much to be now considered classics of alternative rock.Located at 1590 on the AM dial (yes there was a time when AM radio played music instead of people screaming at each other.)the listenership was small, but influential to people who listened to it. KJET was not alone in presenting modern rock to Seattle. There was also KCMU, now KEXP, then a 10 watt student run station on the UW campus. There was KYYX, which played the MTV new wave hits.
While KCMU played the most esoteric music, and KYYX played Flock of Seagulls and Duran Duran,
KJET made it's mark playing the good stuff, early tracks by R.E.M., The Smiths, The Replacements, and others. KJET was supportive of local bands like the Young Fresh Fellows, The Allies, and other Seattle artists.
Working against KJET was it's weak AM signal. The station changed formats in 1988. It's too bad KJET wasn't around for a few more years when alt rock broke big in 1991 with a lot of Seattle bands leading the way.
To really experience KJET you have to listen to the mix in AM-quality, rendered in 32kb modern monophonic sound, included at the end of this mix. For a few years, KJET existed in it's own little way. To me and other Seattle listeners, it made an impact in a big way.
Feedback:
Brilliant work! Love it, love it, love it.
Excellent choices. I was a college radio DJ during the time these songs came out, so it's a nice trip down memory lane for me.
Columbus, Ohio has one of the few remaining independent alternative radio stations: CD101. This reminds me alot of what they played and still play. Good stuff. "Under The Milky Way" is great.
