Young MC, Tone-Loc, and especially Public Enemy broke out of the chutes in tough fashion, while both Guns N' Roses and Poison weighed in with power ballads ("Patience" and "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," respectively). Meanwhile, Neil Young kept on keepin' on, "Rockin' In the Free World." Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" could well be the '80s song most mangled by others — though the Divine Miss M's version is definitive.
