Comment:
A tape of early Cult. Southern Death Cult was Ian Astbury's band before hooking up with Billy Duffy, then they became Death Cult, and finally the Cult. There is some overlap on songs, as some changed and morphed and were retitled. (For example, "A Flower in the Desert" is simply a reworking of "Flowers in the Forest.") I think the pre-Love period of this band is often overshadowed by their later material -- "Horse Nation" is just as powerful now as it was then, all tribal drums and brilliant guitars. You can easily hear how incredible Ian's voice is at the start, and Jamie Stewart was a phenomenal bassist -- he's what is driving half of these songs. "Bone Bag" is the song where you can sense the direction Love would lead them, which is why I made it the last track on the tape. (It was originally a b-side to the Spiritwalker 12", if I remember correctly.)Feedback:
Excellent! It's true, few people know of The Cult's awesome early goth sounds. If you dig B Duffy's guitar, check out his pre-SDC fret-work with Theatre of Hate.
