Comment:

Motor City a.k.a. Detroit MI. Mention Detroit to any non-descript rock fan and you get might get a recognition of Barry Gordy's fine Motown roster of artists ranging from the dynamic Aretha Franklin, the incomparable, Marvin Gaye, the smooth stylings of The Temps and the Four Tops, or The Supremes and The Miracles. Keep in mind Gordy had to send these folks to a boot-camp styled charm school to tame their Detroit souls. Now fast forward about five years, eliminate the charm school and venture into the white trash trailer parks of auto factory workers and then you discover the true grit and attitude what it means to be a Detroit native. In the late sixties an explosion took place led by one street walking cheetah named James Ostertag a.k.a. Iggy Pop, radical Jams-Kickin revolutionaries - The MC5 and fuzz fueled garage rockers - The Rationals. They were the mainstays at Russ Gibb's Grande Ballroom. A ballroom that paired these bands with the likes of Sun Ra and John Coltrane. The resulting sounds reflected life in Detroit, rhythms sounding not unlike the metallic K.O. sounds of auto industrial assembly lines, high pitched guitars squealing and squawking with ear splitting, paint peeling feedback .These were the sounds that guaranteed you'd blown your gasket. Detroit rock was unapologetic, pure raw power. Need to understand Detroit? Look to its natives -Iggy, Sonic Smith , Wayne Kramer, Scott Morgan, Nugent,John Sinclair and Alice Cooper, hell, look at household name natives- Emenim and Kid Rock, hell, even Madonna. Say what ya wanna about their music, but something in Detroit makes ya wanna grab your crotch and flip off the man. The tape contains Detroit sounds from the late sixties to today.

man, you are a wealth of information! I'm guessing that Mr. Bowie (Ziggy) ripped off his pal Iggy (James) for the Title of "The Pretty Things are going to Hell"...you learn something every week on this site. Great job !! (and 1/2 an alphabet to go yet....golly!

The sound of young & psychotic America. Whenever I see one of those Grande Ballroom posters I wish that there were bills that eclectic today.

Iggy is from A2. But I'm guessing you're taking southeast Michigan as a whole.

Didn't know Cinecyde had anything released. They played a benefit for us (Ann Arbor ARA) a few years ago and certainly kicked ass.

Maybe add The Articles, White Stripes, Atomic Fireballs, Von Bondies, Small Brown Bike, Twistin Tarantulas to edition two.

...and to add to that list of next edition candidates: Mitch Ryder, Frijid Pink, Figures On A Beach, Rhythm Method/Corps, Toby Redd, Bitter Sweet Alley, 707, the Look and (what the hell) Art in America.

Damn, you beat me to the punch. I am putting together a similar mix. I plan on including honorary Detroiters J. Geils band and KISS as well as well as some newer stuff like New Radicals, Robert Bradley, Kid Rock and Em. Debating Insane Clown Posse and the Knack.
