Twenty minutes. That's how long it took for the Verve's first run of reunion shows to sell out in late 2007. Never mind the eight years that separated the group's late-'90s split and their sudden return, or the last time frontman Richard Ashcroft and guitarist Nick McCabe played together — a Germany gig that left the latter with a broken hand. (Ashcroft's busted jaw didn't look too pretty, either.) As is the case with most larger-than-life bands, the Verve's combustible, push-and-pull chemistry is exactly what makes them such a must-see. Well, that and some seriously brilliant songwriting, including the clouds-parting grandeur of "Bittersweet Symphony," the Day Glo-doused new-rave nods of "Love Is Noise," the rave-up riffs of "This Is Music," and the hypnotic dreamscapes of "No Come Down" and "She's a Superstar."
