A Joyful Noise
Comment:
When I first thought about making this CD, it was originally going to be a cassette. Side one was going to be exclusively gospel songs and side two was going to be a variety of approaches to Christian music. Well, I ended up making a CD, but the same setup applies. The first six songs are gospel, the last four are a variety of styles. The fifth song is actually a gospel arrangement of Handel's Hallelujah chorus.I wanted to make a CD of Christian songs because that's where my religious beliefs fall, but I also plan to make a cassette or CD of interfaith religious music including Qawwali and other Islamic music, Buddhist chant and whatever else I can get my hands on.
FYI, Hildegard von Bingen was a 12th century abbess whose life was just incredible. She was a mystic, a natural philosopher (an early scientist) and a composer. She was the head of both the convent and monestary where she served, a role almost unheard of for women at the time and in the present day. Her gregorian chant compositions are enjoying a renewed interest and almost everything that she composed that survives today has been recorded in the past decade. Her writings and mystical drawings are also widely available. Regardless of your feelings on religion, Hildegard is interesting enough to check out just because of her amazing life.
