#305 - With Only One Promise, Only One Way To Fall
Comment:
This mix was originally submitted to Zen Running Order on June 5, 2012. The original notes and/or comments are as follows...Darth Pazuzu (06-05-2012):
A bit of a progressive bent to this one, with a weirdly eclectic sprinkling of other things (including a decidedly non-PC punk rock sense of humor on DISC #1).
"Fly From Here" (Overture & Parts I-V)" / "We Can Fly From Here" (live) - After lead singer Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman left Yes in or around 1979, the remaining members of the band - bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe and drummer Alan White - hooked up with Buggles singer Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes to create the "Drama" album in 1980. At the time, it was regarded as something of an odd alliance of musical forces. It was certainly a short-lived one. But "Drama" has held up and aged quite surprisingly well over the years. The very first song that this particular Yes line-up wrote together was "We Can Fly From Here," which actually ended up not making the cut on the "Drama" album but was performed live on the band's 1980 tour. Thirty years later, when Yes once again found itself without the services of longtime frontman Jon Anderson, the band reunited with Horn and Downes. This time, however, Horn would not be at the microphone but in the producer's chair. The lead vocals would be performed by Yes' new singer Benoit David. (BTW, David has since left the band. And the saga continues...!) The band also expanded upon the original song, creating a multi-part "Close To The Edge"-style epic. I decided to include both the new, expanded version as well as the original version, recorded live in 1980.
"Nite Flights" (X 2) - And in keeping with the "flight" motif established by the Yes epic, I only thought it appropriate to include this great Walker Brothers song. I included the Walkers' original as well as Scott Walker superfan David Bowie's cover version from 1993! (BTW, it's a pity I didn't have the means to segue from the 2011 "Fly From Here" epic into the original Walker Brothers version of "Nite Flights." It would have worked like gangbusters, I'm almost certain of it!)
"African Night Flight" < "African Man" < "Back To Africa" - Normally, it's not my policy to include more than one track by the same artist. But in the case of David Bowie, I think everything ties together very nicely with the Walker Brothers connection and the "nite/night flight" motif. And from Bowie's own "night flight," I build on the African connection and delve into some rather dodgy punk-rock humor from Iggy and the Dictators! ;)
"Tao Of The Dead Part I" - The epic title track from the latest disc from ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead. This is actually ONE big track, not ELEVEN as listed. But unfortunately, there was no room to list each and every segment under one title heading, so purely for posting purposes I had to split it into eleven segments.
"Ain't She Sweet" (X 2) - Two different cover versions of the 1927 Milton Ager/Jack Yellen classic, performed by the Beatles at opposite ends of their career.
