#253 - A Crack On The Head Is What You Get For (Not) Asking
Comment:
This mix was originally submitted to Zen Running Order on June 10, 2010. The original notes and/or comments are as follows:Darth Pazuzu (06-10-2010):
"ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Attention, all citizens!! A number of SPIDERS and HYPNOTISTS have recently been sighted in the area! For your own safety, DO NOT APPROACH and DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THEIR EYES, for to do so is to place one's life and health in serious peril!!" ;)
"Mars" < "Are We The Waiting" / "St. Jimmy" - To be perfectly honest, I'm not exactly 100% thrilled to death with this opening sequence, and I know it's not exactly my best. I was always planning to have Warrior Soul's "Mars" as my opener, and I knew that I wanted the Smiths' "Barbarism Begins At Home" to be part of the opening sequence as either the third or fourth song. HOWEVER...at the time, I honestly couldn't think of anything I wanted to put between the two, so the Green Day sequence "Are We The Waiting" / "St. Jimmy" was my admittedly improvised solution. Plus, I also thought that it would be a cool way of acknowledging the new "American Idiot" musical that's out right now...
"Paranoid Opioid" < "Palo Alto" - Frankly, I don't really know whether or not COC's "Paranoid Opioid" is indeed a tongue-in-cheek nod to Radiohead's "Paranoid Android." It's certainly true that both songs are rather lengthy (6+ minutes) and structurally similar, with different segments at different tempos. But anyway, I thought it would be rather cool to put the song back-to-back with a song from Radiohead's "OK Computer" era! Actually, I had to settle for one of their B-sides ("Palo Alto"), because I already used up all of Radiohead's album tracks on earlier mixes I had posted on AOTM! But if anyone else wants to put both COC's and Radiohead's "oid" epics back to back, I would highly recommend it. As dissimilar as both groups are stylistically, I have a hunch it would work like gangbusters! ;)
"Judy Is A Punk" / "The Return Of Jackie And Judy" - As I have hopefully established with clarity by this point, I generally DO NOT use any more than one song by any band or artist in one of my mixes - that is, unless it's: 1) Part of a sequence of tracks which are inextricably bound and tethered to each other by a segue - and which the separation of would be too jarring - or if: 2) The second song is the sequel to the first. The Green Day sequence mentioned above is a good example of 1), while these two Ramones tracks - about the continuing (mis)adventures of punks Jackie and Judy, of course - are a good example of 2)!
"Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk" / "The Nile Song" - I'd like to dedicate this pair of Pink Floyd covers to johnny_luddite, as a nod of appreciation toward his recent "Pink Floyd Meets Frankenstein's Daughter" mix! "Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk" is covered by At The Drive-In, whose singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez - who would later form the Mars Volta - are huge fans of Floyd's debut "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn." And speaking of which...French-Canadian future-shock metal gods Voivod - whose cover of "The Nile Song" is featured here - also do a supercool version of "Astronomy Domine" (which I actually don't own on CD yet, regrettably).
"See Saw" / "Raise My Rent" - And here's a Pink Floyd original, written and sung by their late, lamented keyboardist Richard Wright. (R.I.P.) Interestingly enough, the band's working title for "See Saw" during its recording was "The Most Boring Song In The World Bar Two"! Myself, I don't think it's half bad. Not particularly aggressive or kinetic, mind you, but still pleasant enough. Also featured here is a moody David Gilmour instrumental from his '78 debut.
"If" - NOT a Pink Floyd cover! (HA, HA, HA...) This one's a King's X original, from their '05 "Ogre Tones" disc.
"Waiting For The Man" / "Heroin" - A live cover of the Velvets' "Waiting For The Man," with a few lines from "Heroin" thrown in for good measure, recorded by none ot
Feedback:
Again...NOT ENOUGH SPACE!!! :( :( :(
"Waiting For The Man" / "Heroin" - A live cover of the Velvets' "Waiting For The Man," with a few lines from "Heroin" thrown in for good measure, recorded by none other than Cheap Trick at a very early '74 club gig in Lansing, Michigan! Bassist Tom Petersson takes the lead vocal.
"Shandi" < "Starface" - Well, first in this sequence is KISS' stab at "yacht-rock" balladry! (Thank you, Jimmy Fallon...) And second, we've got one of the lesser-known tracks from White Zombie's "La Sexorcisto." What's really cool about it is that it opens up with a dialogue sample from the classic Star Trek episode "The Way To Eden": "One. We are One!" "One is a beginning." "Are you One, Herbert?" "I am not Herbert." And YES, the White Zombie title COULD also potentially double as a Paul Stanley joke! (NYUK, NYUK, NYUK...)

That Live at the BBC is chock full of Beatle goodies.
Mr. Mirage (06-12-2010):
Well, you caught me on this one. The deal was sealed with the inclusion of Cheap Trick doin' Lou.
