#257 - If The Band Slows Down We'll Yell For More!
Comment:
This mix was originally submitted to Zen Running Order on July 11, 2010. The original notes and/or comments are as follows...Darth Pazuzu (07-11-2010):
FINALLY!! An all-brand spanking new mix from yours truly! And it just might be a little while longer until I get another brand-new one posted, because a lot of my orders have yet to arrive and certain songs have become integral to the fabric of what I've already conceived in my mind, so I shall have to wait!
Dedicated to the memories of:
"We Rock" - Ronnie James Dio R.I.P.
"You Need Hands" - Malcolm McLaren R.I.P.
"In Dreams" / "Blue Velvet / Blue Star (Montage)" / "Love Letters" - Dennis Hopper R.I.P. ("I'll send you a love letter...straight from my heart, fucker! You know what a love letter is? It's a bullet from a fucking gun, fucker! You receive a love letter from me, you're fucked forever! You understand, fuck? I'll send you straight to hell, fucker!") (BTW, is it my imagination, or does Isabella Rossellini's singing voice remind anyone else a little of Nico?)
"We Rock" < "(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock" < "If You Can't Rock Me" / "Rock You All Around The World" < "Rock Your Heart Out" < "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." - Smell a motif here, perhaps...? ;) My idea of bookending sequences!
"Igrayne's Dance" Ever see John Boorman's "Excalibur" (1981), starring Nigel Terry as King Arthur, Nicol Williamson as Merlin and Helen Mirren as Morgana? Well, Trevor Jones did a great score, his cues being interspersed with the works of Richard Wagner and Carl Orff. And here's one of my favorite of Jones' cues!
"Thank God I'm A Man" < "Pea" - A rather barbedly satirical musical number from the soundtrack to the 1981 Richard O'Brien rock musical "Shock Treatment," directed by Jim Sharman - the follow-up (not quite a sequel) to 1975's "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" - followed by a very brief vocal-and-bass solo number from Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, from 1995's "One Hot Minute"! Dedicated to sammyg123, whom I know would most definitely appreciate this bit of sequencing!
"I Put A Spell On You" - The third cover of this particular Screamin' Jay Hawkins classic I've used in a mix - the other two being from Marilyn Manson and Creedence Clearwater Revival.
"Sunrise" - Ever heard Extreme's recent comeback album, "Saudades De Rock"? Not QUITE up there with "Exteme II: Pornograffitti" (1990) and "III Sides To Every Story" (1992), but an excellent collection of songs regardless! And I for one am glad to have them back.
"They Came In" / "Alone" - A couple tracks from the 2000 "Mission: Impossible II" soundtrack. It's been a while since I've used anything from that...
"Mother Nature's Son" < "Mother Earth" (X 2) < "Revelation (Mother Earth)" - Again, smell ANOTHER motif here...? ;)
"International Heroes" - Who exactly are the British Lions, you may be asking? Well, they were a short-lived late-'70s outfit formed from the ashes of Mott The Hoople. You may recall that after Ian Hunter left that band, bassist Overend Watts, drummer Dale "Buffin" Griffin and keyboardist Morgan Fisher hired lead singer Nigel Benjamin and guitarist Ray Major and released two more albums in the mid-'70s under the name of Mott. After Benjamin left the band, the rest of the band got together with singer John Fiddler and released another album under the name British Lions. And "International Heroes," the single from that album, was written by none other than Kim Fowley!
Alaimo (07-11-2010):
What kind of vitamins do you take?!! You certainly have the energy to post here with frequency and interesting concepts.
Darth Pazuzu (07-12-2010):
Centrum, actually... :-)
sammyg123 (07-12-2010):
Thanks for the mention, Darth. I do like that run along with the 2-8 on Side one and the 9-12 on Side two. Good stuff..
doowad (07-15-2010):
I still wish you would only post new mixes, but this does look particularly good.
