Doppelgängers Of They: They Might Be Giants 2002-2013
Comment:
I designed this mix as a companion piece for Idlewild, They Might Be Giants' official compilation covering the same years. Or, actually, to tell the truth: when I first saw the announced tracklist for Idlewild, I figured, "I can do this better". There are no overlaps with that compilation, then, though in fact the only Idlewild tracks I would have included without that restriction are "Careful What You Pack" (definitely) and "We Live In A Dump" (maybe). It looks like the band has a pretty different take on their own history than I do....The 17-track length (stretching about 42 minutes) is also in tribute to Idlewild, plus the fact that I seem to like listening to music in shorter chunks these days. I decided to ignore all TMBG's kids' albums for this mix, even though they were all released during this period, because... well, that's just not what kind of mix this is, and anyway Idlewild only contained one track ("Clap Your Hands") from any of them. One thing Idlewild didn't have that this mix does, though, is a crossfade, here between tracks 6 and 7 -- but, I got such a kick out of connecting those two already-thematically-related songs, plus "Too Tall Girl"'s fadeout as it stands is ridiculously long (it's the next-to-last track on Nanobots, so it makes sense there). Unconsciously, I put a plethora of Linnell tracks on here -- only 1, 6, 9, 16 and parts of 7 are Flansburgh -- but, I pretty much always knew Linnell was the giant of Giants for me. I suppose that's why I made my "God Bless You, Professor Flans" mix (MixID=119695) in the first place, to stave off just that kind of imbalance, for a while at least.
Of course, now TMBG's doing their whole Dial-A-Song project for 2015, and has even released a new album, Glean, so this mix is already outdated. I think it might be a while before I do another TMBG compilation, regardless -- they've been one of my favorite bands forever (along with King Crimson), but there's always so much more music to explore...!
