Zakir's Ubiquities
Comment:
This was originally conceived as a successor to my 2005 Indian-Western fusion mix LOSE MY MIND & DANCE FOREVER (mixid = 98102), but I realized pretty soon that the musician I there called "the crown prince of Indian-Western fusion", tabla player Zakir Hussain, might as well just take the honors and become this mix's featured artist. He's everywhere! Although on "Chura Liya Hai Tum Ne" he's credited with madal, "Indian trap set" and tambourine instead of tabla, and on "John Cage Is Dead" he even trades his tabla in for a djembe (an instrument dear to my heart), his drumming, in some form or another, is all over every track on this mix. He's barely ever credited under his own name: this has got to be the first Single Artist mix I've submitted in which every track has a different artist name! But both "Ek Taal" and "Tabla Solo" here are virtuoso Indian-classical showings, the former a duet with his tabla-playing father.I'm dedicating this mix to my aunt, who heard a story about Hussain on NPR last year and told me I should check it out, but didn't remember Zakir's name. She gave me enough information to find the text version of the story (at http://www.npr.org/2015/01/08/375637915/the-tabla-master-who-jammed-with-the-grateful-dead), though, from which I've taken Jim McGuire's photo to use as the cover art here. Let's give a listen to this next time round...!
