Like every artist, Johnny Cash had predecessors whom he admired and from whom he learned. One could hardly live in the South without being influenced by the Carter Family, and, of course Johnny married into it. Canadian Hank Snow and Jimmie "The Singing Brakeman" Rodgers were archetypal "traveling song" performers, and Woody Guthrie had an intimate storytelling instinct that Cash harnessed in his best work.
