Comment:

The American Recordings would be important just because they were Johnny's last. Or just because they were his introduction to yet another generation. Or just because they really seemed to get at what Zappa would call "the crux of his biscuit." But they are important for yet another reason: the breadth and depth of the songs Cash chose to cover. Early in his career, he didn't stray all that far from either contemporaries or classics, but as he grew older, he covered songs by a wider variety of writers, some of whom hadn't even been born when he had his first success.
