Like all great things, Nickel Creek’s pioneering partnership eventually came to an end, though the band members have been anything but idle since their fifth and final album. Guitarist Sean Watkins formed Fiction Family with Switchfoot singer Jon Foreman — their single “When She’s Near” drips dreamy Beatlesque baroque pop — and Works Progress Administration with Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips — soak up their mix of indie rock and breezy West Coast pop on “Paralyzed.” Mandolin man Chris Thile brought his bluegrass influences even further outside the box with the Punch Brothers, bordering on acoustic art rock with “Punch Bowl” and a down-home deconstruction of Radiohead’s “Packt Like Sardines In a Crush’d Tin Box.” Fiddler Sara Watkins’ solo career stayed closest to home with honey-voiced Americana heart-warmers like “Lord Won’t You Help Me.”
