Chris Thile and Sara Watkins were both just eight years old when Nickel Creek started out. By the time the trio split in 2007, though they were still young, they’d been together for nearly two decades. During that time, they exploded nearly every preconception about what a band could do in a bluegrass format, and how far the style itself could be stretched. They brought alt-rock, jazz, R&B, pop and more into their all-acoustic fiddle/mandolin/guitar setup, and covered everybody from Bob Dylan to Pavement. After bringing bluegrass back into the limelight, they went their separate ways, and on their own the Nickel Creekers are more active than ever.
